P2 formating error Started By Jan Becker, Aug 17 2009 03:24 PM Please log in to reply 3 replies to this topic #1 Jan Becker Jan Becker New Basic Members 6 posts Director Posted 17 August 2009 - 03:24 PM Hi everybody, just came back from a trip from hell. We were shooting a corporate video in different places in the U.S. over 9 days and I had nothing but trouble with my P2 workflow. I normally love the P2 system and I'm really upset right now: First, when I connected the HVX to my laptop to dump the http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?144773-1394-INITIAL-ERROR-Firewire-gt-external-drive cards, they didn't mount (they always did). So there was no way I could download them. After many tries I was able to bring them over with a USB cable, which shouldn't even be possible with a MacBook. Next day I got an external hard drive and after several tries I was able to download them in the host mode. I got several different error messages from "internal 1394 err" to just "format err". Anyway, it worked eventually. Then http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=40775 on the last day of shooting, 2 minutes before starting I wanted to reformat the cards and I got the following message in the thumbnail mode: "format err" and "P2 Micon err".Now it just says "can't format". I had a back up camera, so I still shot it, but it was a Canon and the footage doesn't match. I hope I don't lose this client, it's one of my best. So far he has been understanding. To my knowledge I didn't do anything wrong, since I followed my usual work flow. The only new element was a rented P2 card. I also have the latest firmware on my HVX. Now the camera just refuses to record on cards. I called Panasonic in L.A., but I have the feeling it's going to be expensive so I'm reluctant to bring it over and I want to maybe find a way to fix it myself. I would be very grateful for any input, Thanks, Jan 0 Back to top #2 Jim Keller Jim Keller Basic Members 290 posts Producer Fresno, CA Posted 18 August 2009 - 06:49 PM The firewire (1394) connection on the HVX200 is notoriously buggy. After the firewire connection on our second camera gave up, we wound up buying a P2 card reader and now transfer the files that way. It's worth the money, both in terms of stability and ease of use.

The only purpose for this is to copy data off the P2's to the harddisk in the field, without involving a laptop computer. Does anyone know how to make this work, or what kind of firewire harddisk is required? I refuse to spend AU$2800 on a measly 1394 initial error 100GB drive, so FireStore is not an option. Any off the shelve firewire 800 capable drive in a RAID1 config should be able to easily obtain the required datarate. I have tried to format the disk in NTFS (would have surprised me if that worked, needless to say it did not), tried a 32GB partition in FAT32 as primary, extended, active, not active, tried em all... no luck. Panasonic's statement that you have to use a "compatible harddisk" for firewire does not help a bit there, either.... Does anyone have a disk working? If so, what brand, what file system / format are you using? Thanks! - Balt February 23rd, 2008, 10:44 AM #2 TingSern Wong Major Player Join Date: Jan 2004 Location: Singapore, Rep of SINGAPORE Posts: 749 Have you tried formatting your HDD using the HVX202 "format" function? Come to think about it - why not just try a NON-RAID Firewire HDD first. Datarate is not a problem here - because you are not capturing the data in real time - but, you are just copying the already recorded P2 data to another HDD - so even if you have a slow Firewire HDD - it will not be a problem - so long as it is capable of at least 480 Mbits/sec (which an ordinary 7200 RP

Print to Video command or when playing footage directly in the Viewer or Timeline. To output to P2 cards, the following must be true: The camcorder recording mode and your footage in FinalCutPro must have matching settings. For example, if your footage is 720p60, the camcorder recording mode must be set to 720P/60P. Your current video playback selection must match the camcorder recording mode. For example, if your camcorder recording mode is set to 720P/60P, you must choose View > Video Playback > DVCPRO HD (720p60) (1280x720). The same option appears in the A/V Devices tab of the Audio/Video Settings window. If you don’t see the video playback option you want, try changing the camcorder recording mode (for more information, see the setup steps below). You must have available space on the P2 cards inserted in the Panasonic P2 camcorder. The following instructions for outputting footage from FinalCutPro to P2 cards use a Panasonic AG-HVX200 camcorder as an example. To set up FinalCutPro and a Panasonic AG-HVX200 camcorder for output to P2 cards Connect the camcorder and computer using a 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire cable. On the camcorder, do the following:Choose Camera mode.Press the Menu button.Choose the Recording Setup menu and then select REC FORMAT.Set the REC FORMAT to the format of your footage in FinalCutPro.For example, if your footage is DVCPRO HD 720p60, select 720P/60P.Press the mode button to switch to MCR/VCR mode.Press the AUDIO DUB/THUMBNAIL button. If the current video playback setting in FinalCutPro does not match the camcorder recording mode, you may see “1394 INPUT ERROR” flashing on the camcorder display.Press the Menu button and choose the RECORDING SETUP menu.Turn on the 1394 TC REGEN and 1394 UB REGEN options, then press the Menu button to exit the menu.In FinalCutPro, choose View > Video Playback, then choose the format you want to output via FireWire. For example, if you want to output 720p60 footage and the camcorder recording mode is set to 720P/60P, you should choose View > Video Playback > DVCPRO HD (720p60) (1280x720).Open a clip in the Viewer or a sequence in the Timeline whose format matches the recording mode of the camcorder.Choose View > External Video > All Frames. The current frame in the Viewer or Canvas appears on the camcorder display. If the current frame does not appear, start over from step 2.Do one of the following:Choose File > Print to Video, choose your output options, then click OK.Press the Space bar to begin playing your footage directly in the Viewer or Timeline.Note: For best results, deselect the Automatically Start Recording checkbox in the Print to Video window.O
