I took the hard disk drive out and put one in out of another computer I have and it reports the same error, but when I put it back in the other computer the hard drive is fine. So I am wondering is it my motherboard or some other problem. I've also swapped out the ram, same error. It is a compaq presario x1000 laptop. It was bought at a work auction for next to nothing, but I would like to get it working for the kids. That might be the culprit since a perfectly working drive from another system reports the same error when connected. Try the original drive in your other system and see what diagnostics reports on the drive. I recommend downloading and burning to CD a bootable ISO of hard drive diagnostics tool from the maker of the hard disk. Then boot off the CD to run the diagnostics. The disk may test ok, but an issue is being reported. I would back up pictures and important data onto DVD's or over to another hard drive.
