This article contains basic troubleshooting instructions for 403 Forbidden errors. Symptom You get the following error when you try to visit a web page: Figure 1. Causes and Solutions There are three common causes for this error. Here they are listed from most likely to least likely. Remember to replace example.com with your own domain name. Grid: /domains/example.com/html/ This is the path you will use for FTP. DV server: /var/www/vhosts/dv-example.com/httpdocs/ When you connect with your FTP user, you just need to navigate into the httpdocs directory. If this folder does not exist, feel free to create it. Error 403 - Access Forbidden 12/11/2009 When using Automatic Update or the Windows/Microsoft Update web site, you might received the error "403 - Access forbidden - You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you http://www.itprofessionalservices.net/MU403.shtml supplied." We are seeing many reports of people getting this error since yesterday. This appears to be caused by a corrupted update to a Windows Update Agent file. The Windows update log file is in "%windir%\Windowsupdate.log". In the log file it might say: FATAL: Update required for C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuweb.dll: target version = 7.2.6001.788, required version = 7.4.7600.226 What Should You Do Now If you see this error, just update your Windows Update Agent to the last version with 403 forbidden the /wuforce parameter. (If you are doing this as a batch, you might want to use the/quiet and /norestart switches.) To obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent, seehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104. To reinstall the Windows Update Agent,download the relevant file from the appropriatelinks provided in the article above and save it to a drive.
