server. In outlook I get this: Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server.Click to expand... Then if I try to telnet to the server, I get this: 421 Cannot http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-networking/cannot-connect-to-smtp-server-in-windows-live-mail/4c29baf5-6be3-4b75-9b2c-8d24cbd1b53f connect to SMTP server xx.xx.xx.xx (xx.xx.xx.xx:25), connect error 10060Click to expand... I Opened port 587 in my firewall to try to send mail through an alternate port SMTP will not recognize it. When I try to telnet, I get the following: Connecting To mail.mydomain.com...Could not open connection to the host, on port 587: Connect failedClick to expand... Also, there are no errors or connection failures in /usr/local/psa/var/log/maillog https://talk.plesk.com/threads/cannot-connect-to-smtp-server-outgoing-mail.59367/ Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it? acidbox, Sep 6, 2005 #1 jamesyeeoc Guest 0 I Opened port 587 in my firewall to try to send mail through an alternate port SMTP will not recognize it.Click to expand... Other than just opening the port, what configurations did you do to tell SMTP to listen/accept on that port? Was the Outlook error code one of the following: • 0x800ccc15 • 0x80042108 • 0x800ccc0e • 0x8004210b • 0x800CCC0B • 0x800CCC79 • 0x800ccc67 • 0x80040900 (all these indicate no response from mail server) Try telnet'ing to your server on port 25 and 587 to see if you get any response. Post results here. From a SSH root login, see if Qmail and/or IMAP are running in memory: ps -ax |grep 'qmail' ps -ax |grep 'imap' jamesyeeoc, Sep 6, 2005 #2 acidbox Guest 0 Thanks for the reply. If you look at my first post, you will see the results of the telnet attempt. The error is quoted above. The outlook code was 0x80042109. i did a ps on the qmail: 28574 ? S 0:00 /usr/bin/spamd --username=popuser --daemonize --helper-home-dir=/var/qmail --max-children 20 --create-prefs --nouser-config --virtual-config-dir=/var/

I can see exactly what they've done, but it doesn't make sense...! Can someone help? I first noticed the problem last week when sending mail via Outlook, where I was getting the error mentioned in the subject line - cannot connect to SMTP / error 421 / 0x8004219. I could still receive mail without 421 cannot a problem. I had made no changes to the set up at all (same setup I've had for years, through multiple ISP changes), but I have changed my ISP in the last month. I hadn't sent any mail since changing broadband provider until last week. My Mail Provider settings are: mail.freenetname.co.uk smtpmail.freenetname.co.uk Outgoing mail requires authentication Incoming server - port 110 Outgoing server - port 25 I am still able to use these settings on my mobile, as long as I'm not 421 cannot connect using my home wireless / broadband to connect. If I use wireless, mail will not send. I had run a repair on the PST file, and had played with settings in Avast - 2 potential solutions, which didn't make a difference, so I contacted my ISP today. After a bit of investigation, she made a change to my outgoing mail server, which is now: smtp.orangehome.co.uk untick outgoing mail requires authentication and now mail works. and I don't understand why! Surely my mail settings are governed by my mail provider, not my ISP? Otherwise they wouldn't still work on my phone? Is my mail now being sent via Orange / EE, rather than via my mail provider?? Will my mail still work on my mobile phone if I change the outgoing server to Orange? I'm confused!!!!!! Can anyone help?? It's one of many anti-spam measures adopted by providers. Yours is just slow to have done so as most made the switch years ago. If your off ISP mail provider offers service on another port (usually SSL on 587) you can try setting that up. Share Can't find your answer ? Ask !
