of questions I get from my visitors at thesitewizard.com, I can see that one of the most dreaded errors that newcomers to CGI face is the "500 500 internal server error php ajax Internal Server Error". It is one of the most uninformative error messages

you some concrete, practical steps that you can take to narrow down the problem and hopefully eliminate it. For the uninitiated, a "500 Internal Server Error" is a message much http://timtechsoftware.com/tutorial-how-to-use-perl-with-cpanel-500-internal-server-error-fix/ like the common "404 File Not Found" message. You get the latter message in your browser when you try to access a non-existent web page. You get the "500 Internal Server Error" message when you try to run a script with problems. For the purposes of this article, I am assuming that your CGI script is a Perl script, by far the http://www.thesitewizard.com/archive/servererror.shtml most commonly available on the Internet. We will try to eliminate the most common errors first (and the easiest-to-eliminate ones): Location Did you upload your scripts into the right place? This is not as obvious as it may seem. Some servers are configured to run your CGI scripts anywhere. Others will only run it when it is installed in a particular directory. It is not just a matter of creating a "cgi-bin" directory — for example, some hosts configure the server so that it will run scripts only from a particular directory outside the web directory structure (for security reasons). Your web page will still call the script "/cgi-bin/script.pl" but the server maps it to the actual directory. You will have to upload it in the right directory, regardless of what your web page calls it. Find out such information from your web host's documentation. File Upload Mode Did you upload your Perl script in ASCII mode? Your FTP client may have uploaded the script in binary mode if you did not take any special action. Perl scripts are ASCII files, and since differen
I'm trying to run an extremely simple perl cgi, and it always gives me some sort of error. the one I http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-57210.html really can't explain is the 500 Internal Server Error. Does this server support these Perl scipts. If not, does anyone know one that does? Thanks in advance Daniel15 Hi, Please check that the https://support.lunarpages.com/knowledge_bases/article/298?fallback=true file is CHMODded to 0755, and try running it again. What script are you trying to run? Did you make it, or obtain it from elsewhere? Liam21 I am using FileZilla and 500 internal have set the file attributes the readable and executable by all, but writable only by owner. This gives me the number 755 in the box at the bottom. It still gives the same error. It is a script that I have taken and modified slightly. I realize that this can be dangerous, but I have gotten it to compile at home here, and really don't think 500 internal server that the code is the problem... erlendhg Today, I experienced exactly the same problem with all my little self written php scripts in some specified folders. I tried to chmod all the directories and files to 777, but I still just get this annoying 500 Internal Server Error. All those scripts has worked perfect before. What can be wrong? Is it something with the server? -- EDIT -- I just uploaded a file in ASCII mode in one of the problem directories as "index.html" and it worked just fine. Then I renamed it to "index.php" and I get the 500 Internal Server Error.... I tried to chmod all the directories and files to 777, but I still just get this annoying 500 Internal Server Error. That's the problem. Please CHMOD the directory to 0755, as the script won't run in a directory CHMODded to 0777. Since you're on server 1 (using cPanel), you may check your error log to see what the problem is. ascii. Uploading in binary (or image) format is usually the cause of the error. You may need to force upload in ascii mode in your FTP program rather than using auto mode in the program. Also check the file permissions on the script and make sure that they are set to 755. You can change the permissions through your FTP client or by clicking on the filename in cPanel's File Manager and clicking 'Change Permissions' on the right hand side. Check the first script line for the path to perl and be sure it is set to /usr/bin/perl. Finally, check the Error Log in cPanel to get clues about where the error may be occuring. You can post the error and receive programming assistance by visiting our support forums at http://www.lunarforums.com. If you are receiving this error for a PHP script, be sure permissions are set to 755 rather than 777 or 644 rather than 666 as we run on suphp which does not support or require 777 or 666 to write to a folder or file. Also, the temporary URL will not work with PHP scripts. They require a fully-propagated domain name instead. We can change your domain name to a free subdomain of lunarpages temporarily to test.
