I'm not sure how many times you guys have seen this error, http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/qmail/users/98018 but I'm currently having a problem with it. I'm running qmail on my mail server. I can send (through command line) and receive mail on it (with external mail programs, http://qmr.qmailrocks.narkive.com/aQSCsylG/telnet-command-error-502-unimplemented-5-5-1 and Squirrel Mail). I cannot send mail from Squirrel Mail though. I get the 502 unimplemented error. I'm also running qmail on my home box, and I'm using it just 502 unimplemented to send email (not receive). My mail is stored remotely on a server. I can send and receive mail fine from my box, but when I telnet to port 25 and type "user" I get 502 unimplemented. The problem on my home box is not as big as the problem on my server, but I'd like to get both sorted 502 unimplemented 5.5 out.I'd really appreciate if someone could help me to figure out what's going on here, and to fix it. I've spent days, maybe weeks looking on Google and I haven't turned up an answer to my problem. I'm hoping these mailing lists will provide some insight as to what's going on with my boxes. Thanks in advance. ck-lists at cksoft Mar20,2003,3:39AM Post #2 of 5 (2227 views) Permalink Re: 502 unimplemented (#5.5.1) [In reply to] Hi, On 19 Mar 2003, Blake Covarrubias wrote: > Hello. was try to telnet from the dmz zone on port 25 of theQmail Server ,and telnet on port 25 of the Qmail server from internet "Dailup Users" , soi check smtp proxy feature is enable in the firewall but is disabled bydefault , what possible reason for this problem other firewall .ThanksMaged ShakerThe Qmail system is installed in DMZ zone and has private IPaddress ,so when i test the qmail from The same subnet with telnetcommand when i typed EHLO command the output listed what qmailauthentication method Support , the strange case when try to test theqmail server from Internet with telnet command when typed EHLO theoutput display 502 unimplemented (#5.5.1)when you telnet to port 25, the first thing the server sends is abanner. on a qmail server, this banner is the number "221" followedby ( the contents of /var/qmail/control/smtpgreeting, or /var/qmail/control/me if there is no smtpgreeting file ) , followed by "ESMTP".try this: telnet to the server's port 25 from a machine in the sameDMZ segment, and then telnet to the server's port 25 from a machine"outside" (i.e. from a dialup session.)first, are the banners the same?second, watch the logs from your SMTP service (using a "tail -F" or"tail --follow=name" command.) when the machine in your DMZ connects, you will see log entries about the connection. are you also seeingthese log entries when an outside machine connects?if the banners are not the same and the logs don't appear when anoutside machine tries to connect, then the outside machines are notactually connecting to your server in the first place- probablybecause your firewall is intercepting incoming SMTP traffic.many firewalls include an SMTP proxy, where the firewall acceptsincoming mail from the outside world as if it were a mail server, andthen forwards it on to your real mail server inside the firewall.this can be a good thing, but if you are trying to configure qmail todo anything special (such as TLS or AUTH) then it's a bad thing, asoutside clients can't get to your qmail server in the first place.--------------------------------------------------| John M.
