Terminology>Disciplinary Terminology>Religious Terminology> Absolute Error The difference between the measured or inferred value of a quantity and its actual value , given by how to calculate absolute error in physics (sometimes with the absolute value taken) is called the absolute error. The absolute error of the sum or difference of a number of quantities is less than or equal to the sum of their absolute errors. Relative Error of "c" as a % (RE%) = 100(c – x)/x RE% = 100(31.5 – π)/π RE% = 100(0.008407... ÷ 3.141592...) = 0.267614... = 0.268% (3 dec pl) So the estimate of 3.15 for π is 0.268% over the true value of π. Put another way ... 3.15 is (100% – 0.268% = ) a 99.732% accurate value of π. (BTW, the "usual" estimate used for π, 3.14, is 99.949% accurate! In most uses, this is quite good enough. But in some uses, like navigation in space, where long distances are involved, more accurate estimates of π are required.) Hope this helps! Cheers! ☺ .
