Click "Start", and click "Run". Type microsoft access denied "regedit" (without quotation marks) and click OK. 2. Right-click HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and choose Permission. 3. Please check if "Administrators" is listed in the "Group and User" name list. If not, please click the "Add" button and type "Administrators" in the open window and click "OK" to add this group. 4. Highlight "Administrators" and check on "Full Control" under "Accept". 5. Click the "Advanced" button and choose the "Owner" tab. 6. Highlight the current user account in the list and mark the check box before "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects". 7. Click OK to save changes and wait for Windows Server 2003 to transfer the ownership of all the objects on the partition. Note: if there is the warning information "Error: The Registry Editor could not set security in the key currently selected, or some of its subke
"Access Denied" might be fixable, or might require more aggressive measures to install SP2. by Leo A. Notenboom, © 2009 I have a Dell that was preinstalled with XP. I installed SP2 and had to uninstall it due to printer compatibility problems. Now, to install PhotoShop, etc., I need SP2 and SP3. I tried to reinstall SP2 from the CD I ordered from Microsoft but now it will not install properly. I get an error message "Access Denied" about half way through the installation process. Any ideas? • Well, I don't know what's causing your "Access Denied". Given the state I suspect https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/fd4db16d-8d78-4a66-8153-5ec26f93f6d1/access-denied-erro-while-installating-windows-server-2003-service-pack-2?forum=winserversetup your machine is in, it could be any of many different things. I did find one possibility, and I'll point you at that so you can give it a try. Should that not work, however, I do have an idea on how to move forward, and what I would do in your shoes. The only problem is that I suspect you won't like it. • A little bit of research on the http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_install_sp2_if_i_get_access_denied_or_some_other_failure_when_i_try.html web lead me to this post, dated from 2004: "Access is Denied" message when installing Windows XP SP2. The author does ask for a donation, but ultimately if you read on you'll find everything you need to try his solution for free as well. You can elect to help by donating, or not, after you find out whether it works for you. Essentially, it's an obscure permissions thing that uses a download from Microsoft and a set of Windows Command Prompt instructions you can copy/paste to try out. If that solution fails to do the trick, however, things get stickier. (See update below also.) In your shoes, I would then backup, reformat and reinstall Windows - and everything else - from scratch. And that includes bringing it completely up to date to SP3 as well as all the latest patches before installing anything else. I can't speak for to the printer compatibility problems, but it's very likely that the SP2 and SP3 installs will work on a freshly installed copy of Windows XP. "... it's very likely that the SP2 and SP3 installs will work on a freshly installed copy of Windows XP." The problem as I see it is likely one of software rot. Over time random files and settings get "mes

Windows Server 2003 SP2 Fails - 'Access is Denied' (PLEASE HELP) Re: Windows Server 2003 SP2 Fails - 'Access is Denied' (PLEASE HELP) New 09 Oct 2009 #1 methos04 Guest Re: Windows Server 2003 SP2 Fails - 'Access is Denied' (PLEASE HELP) It's your registry. The account your using to install the service pack doesn't have permission to certain keys. The long way to fix this is to enable verbose (microsoft has an article on how to do this) reinstall the pack, then read the logs and see which keys are failing. Then goto those keys highlight the key, right click select permissions and make sure the account your using has full rights. Or the easy way and fastest is to just open regedit, highlight every root key, select permissions and give your account full permissions to every hive. I did this and it worked. Once complete. undo what you did. good luck.
