I've attempted to make changes to the startup programs using MSCONFIG and got: "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service access. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes." I have a Dell with Win XP Media Center Edition, SP3. I've search a bit and know that I don't have the HP printer issue. When I searched for the msconfig.exe file - I've attached a screen shot - well, I just think it's strange but have no idea what I'm looking at. So, it could be fine. I just wanted to mention it. I hope you can help. Thanks in advance. I have read a lot of threads on different forums but I could not overcome this issue yet that I have been experiencing for a while. 1- I logged as a user that has admin privilege on Win XP SP3. 2- I am expereincing this problem in both normal and safe modes. 3- Yes I do have hp OfficeJet Pro L7590 driver and utilities installed, on my laptop and desktop http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/msconfig-an-access-denied-error-was-returned.134844/ ,,,as far as i remember (to be checked) I have got no problem with the laptop , only with desktop. 4- When I had Avast AV free version I had this problem. 5- Then I uninstalled Avast AV and installed ESET smart security same problem still going on. 6- I tried many online scanning to make sure that there is no spyware or malware installed on the system. Any other suggestions ? Thanks Sep 18, 2009 #1 silentdeaath TS Rookie it seems u got urself some trojan or worms...try Process Explorer & Autoruns from SysInternals.. They ll help u have a look at the various processes that are executed at start up and also the currently running..Remove any suspicious ones n see if it helps..also do check the LOGON tab in Autoruns...delete any suspicious registry keys... Note: A lot of trojans, worms and viruses can & are outsmarting the Anti viruses...So try n see if u can heal ur system manually... Sep 18, 2009 #2 Bobbye Helper on the Fringe Posts: 16,335 +36 I have 2 suggestions: 1. Start> Run> type in services.msc> double-click on the Service> make the change> check the Dependency tab to see if it is dependent on another Service to run. 2. IF that doesn't work, if it IS permissions issue, running one of the following should fix it:
disable a program from starting up by using the MSCONFIG - System Configuration Utility, I received an error stating: "An Access Denied http://www.pchell.com/support/msconfig_access_denied_error.shtml error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administratoraccount to make the specified changes" Unfortunately, this error happens even using an account https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH167463.html with Administrator priviledges, and the error doesn't give enough information to let you know which service is causing the problem. After an hour or more of trial and error, I access denied traced the problem to an update for his HP printer software. The HP software loads a service called PML Driver HPZ12 into the Services section that loads automatically. This service is used by many HP printers including the HP PSC 2100, 2200, 4100, and 6100 series of All-in-One printers, the Deskjet 6600 and 6800 series, the PhotoSmart series, and All-in-One OfficeJet printers. an access denied Trying to disable this service in Computer Management, however, was not the answer. It would not allow me to change the Startup type from Automatic to either Manual or Disabled. It appears the PML Driver HPZ12 service handles non-printing related two-way communications between the PC and the HP printer. These tasks would include things like low ink level information, and on All-in-One HP devices it would include scanning options and such between the printer and the computer. So, although you probably don't want to disable it, setting it to manual would solve the MSCONFIG error and still allow you to scan and accomplish other tasks with the printer. Now, however, is the tricky part...HOW to set the service to disabled, manual, or automatic. It seems HP has decided that the only way you can change the properties or Startup Type of the PML Driver HPZ12 service is by editing the registry. So, follow the steps below to change this service if you want, however be carefully when editing the registry. Click on Start, Run Type REGEDIT and Press Enter or Click OK Click o
