I've attempted to make changes to the startup programs using MSCONFIG and got: "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service access. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes." I have a Dell with Win XP Media Center Edition, SP3. I've search a bit and know that I don't have the HP printer issue. When I searched for the msconfig.exe file - I've attached a screen shot - well, I just think it's strange but have no idea what I'm looking at. So, it could be fine. I just wanted to mention it. I hope you can help. Thanks in advance. Administrator priviledges, and the error doesn't give enough information to let you know which service is causing the problem. After an hour or operating system returned error 5 access denied more of trial and error, I traced the problem to an update for his HP printer software. The HP software loads a service called PML Driver HPZ12 into the Services section that loads automatically. This service is used by http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/384549/msconfig-access-denied-error-was-returned/ many HP printers including the HP PSC 2100, 2200, 4100, and 6100 series of All-in-One printers, the Deskjet 6600 and 6800 series, the PhotoSmart series, and All-in-One OfficeJet printers. Trying to disable this service in Computer Management, however, was not the answer. It would not allow me to change the Startup type from Automatic to either Manual or Disabled. It appears the PML Driver HPZ12 service handles non-printing related two-way communications between the PC and the HP printer. http://www.pchell.com/support/msconfig_access_denied_error.shtml These tasks would include things like low ink level information, and on All-in-One HP devices it would include scanning options and such between the printer and the computer. So, although you probably don't want to disable it, setting it to manual would solve the MSCONFIG error and still allow you to scan and accomplish other tasks with the printer. Now, however, is the tricky part...HOW to set the service to disabled, manual, or automatic. It seems HP has decided that the only way you can change the properties or Startup Type of the PML Driver HPZ12 service is by editing the registry. So, follow the steps below to change this service if you want, however be carefully when editing the registry. Click on Start, Run Type REGEDIT and Press Enter or Click OK Click on the Pluses (+) next to the following items in the left column of the Registry Editor HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE System CurrentControlSet Services PML Driver HPZ12 In the right-hand column find the key named Start and double-click on it Change the value in decimal to one of the following 2 for Automatic 3 for Manual 4 for Disabled Click on OK Close the Registry Editor Reboot your computer If you changed the setting to Manual or Disabled, you should be able to open MSCONFIG and make any changeswithout encountering the Access Denied error. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes. The user account I am logged on with is an administrator account, but is the fact the username is not "administrator" causing the problem? The changes are saved; though the errors occur whenever I hit click Apply or OK. I don't receive similar errors any other time I make software/hardware/OS changes. Update: the error occurs with either Startup items or Services. All of them generate the error. Services.msc shows the majority of services have Log On As "Local System"; the rest are "Network Service". What exactly are trying to do. And if it's stop a service/process from starting check said service in services.msc and see what it's set to log in as. –Not Kyle stop stalking me Dec 19 '11 at 13:41 1 My admin is certannly not called admin , that gives the hackers the first password :-) it has never caused a problem (that i know of). –Psycogeek Dec 19 '11 at 13:48 1 Have you run full anti-virus and malware/spyware scans? Some are nasty and can "hijack" services and remove admin privileges. –CharlieRB Dec 19 '11 at 13:59 See above, services are either logged on using Local System or Network Service. If I tick the box to "allow service to interact with desktop" it makes no difference. –Steve Dec 20 '11 at 23:44 1 @Psycogeek: yeah, I agree. All anti virus, firewall etc runs without a problem.
