UAC settings and made sure they're set to "Never Notify". I've also tried to run sfc.exe, but can't: C:\Users\aagha>sfc.exe Access is denied. Finally, I've tried to run cmd.exe as administrator, but no luck. The one thing I've noticed is that if I go to cmd.exe's Properties and then the Security tab, I see that TrustedInstaller cmd error 5 access denied has Full control, but SYSTEM, Administrators and Users have only: Read & execute andRead I've tried to change permissions by editing, but when I do so, I get an "Access is denied" message. I've run out of ideas on what else to try and would appreciate the help. Edited by aagha Sunday, April 21, 2013 6:37 AM Tuesday, April 09, 2013 6:13 AM Reply | Quote Answers 1 Sign in to vote SOLVED! The problem was that I had the Personal firewall from Comodo installed. By uninstalling this, all normal DOS functionality seems to have returned! I need to change the privacy settings on a folder, and I have to do it in https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/725d44a6-fd10-40a3-9049-e0ce2a5779dd/solved-windows-7-cmd-prompt-gives-access-is-denied-error-for-every-command?forum=w7itprogeneral dos. Most people are able to solve the problem I have by taking possession of a folder that has been made private in Windows XP. But that option does not work for me. I need to find a way to access the private folder in dos because I can no longer get to the folder in XP to change the privacy settings because Windows Explorer freezes before I get there. I can http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/passing-access-denied-in-dos.100973/ only reach the folder in dos. My disk has too many corrupted spots. I can still get around in the file system in dos, but explorer freezes. So, I need a way to overcome "access is denied" in dos. Please help. Here’s the full situation. My hard disk failed when I bumped the computer while it was shutting down. There are many corrupted files. I am now accessing it as an external drive. Some files will not open even through dos due to disk damage. But I can get to the folder that I really need data from in dos, then I hit "access is denied." But I absolutely can’t get there using Windows Explorer. In other folders I have had great success copying files one by one with xcopy until I hit a bad one. But this most important folder is the one I “made private” in XP. Now I can’t get in. How do I make it not private in dos? There must be a command or other strategy for changing privacy settings or overcoming the "access is denied" roadblock in dos. Please help. The .CMD file does some processing and then copies a file from one folder to another. It worked fine on Windows XP; on Windows 8, when the "copy" command runs, it returns the error message "Access is denied". If I copy the file using Windows Explorer, a dialog box pops up with the message "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this folder". I click on "Continue", and the file gets copied. I don't know the details of UAC, but I know that I don't want to change permissions to allow the file to be copied without intervention. That is, I don't want the whole .CMD file to run as administrator. I want to right-click the input file, run the .CMD file, and have the dialog appear when the "copy" command tries to run; I'll then click on "Continue" to allow only the copy command to run with administrator privilege. (If there were another place in the .CMD file where a file were copied, or any other operation that required administrator privilege, I would want the dialog to appear again, to ask if it's ok to run that operation as administrator). Can this be done? windows-8 command-line share|improve this question edited Oct 7 '13 at 16:50 Moses 8,203134788 asked Sep 19 '13 at 2:40 user184411 1331210 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted I'm afraid there's no simple solution to what you're trying to do. cmd is not very interactive, and scripts are intended to be run without human attention. another limitation lies in the way UAC works: a process can be elevated only when it starts; after a process is started, it either has administrator privileges or not. So in your case, for every command that could potentially lead to UAC prompt, you have to code both ways: where the script has permission to copy wi
