I am able to open Notepad with the app pool account credentials (and open the html file I'm trying to browse). If I add the app pool's domain account to the local administrators group, the site loads. However, this is not acceptable for our environment. I have successfully configured this site on

This group ensure the Worker Process will have the required privileges to run correctly. Also, your WebSite root folder must have Read permissions for IIS_WPG, which is the case if your root is in Inetpub\wwwroot. Same for C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\vx.x.x.x\Temporary ASP.NET Files + Write, if you run ASP.NET WebSites. FYI, in IIS 7, the group is now known as IIS_IUSRS. Most of them simply use http://serverfault.com/questions/429116/iis-6-denies-access-to-the-default-document Integrated authentication, but a couple use forms as well. All the applications work properly and are correctly accessible. The problem I'm trying to resolve is access to the default document. It is currently specified as index.htm. Both index.htm and the Default Web Site are configured to allow anonymous access (with none of the authenticated acces boxes checked). However, access is denied to the file. Accessing via server.domain.tld/ and server.domain.tld/index.htm both yield 401 errors. However, server.domain.tld/default.htm (file does not exist) properly returns a 404. If I alter the file security on index.htm to allow integrated authentication, then requesting /index.htm directly works properly for users with domain accounts, but anonymous users get a login prompt/401. How can I configure IIS to allow all users to view index.htm via server.domain.tld/? iis-6 configuration asp.net-mvc authorization share|improve this question asked Sep 17 '12 at 15:21 yoozer8 1328 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote File permissions for anonymous access are set via a special user account called IUSR_
