Windows 7: Receiving "Error: Access is denied" when using fsutil setshortname 08 Jul 2013 #1 Win7Wilson13 Windows https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/826941 7 Enterprise 64-bit 1 posts Receiving "Error: Access is denied" when using fsutil setshortname I am trying to use the fsutil setshortname to set "Program Files" to PROGRA~1, but the system is giving me an "Error: Access is denied" response. The following is what I have typed: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/296656-receiving-error-access-denied-when-using-fsutil-setshortname.html All rights reserved. C:\>fsutil file setshortname "Program Files" PROGRA~1 Error: Access is denied. As you can tell, I first tried to do a reference to the path of Program Files, and failed. Then, I tried without the path file and got the same result. What could be the reason that the system is denying the access? Thanks. (P.S. This Command Prompt is ran as Administrator, so that shouldn't be the issue) My System Specs Computer type PC/Desktop OS Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit Win7Wilson13 View Public Profile Find More Posts by Win7Wilson13 . 08 Jul 2013 #2 Ztruker Windows 10 Pro X64 6,285 posts Space Coast of Florida Well, the shortname is already set as you want. How access denied can I add it back? up vote 0 down vote favorite 1 Windows 7 (32-bit) I have an application that requires short path syntax for a sub-directory under Program Files (c:\Program Files\Foo Example\Foo Example2). On MOST of my user systems, it's enabled by default and working fine. However on a select sub-set of users, it's disabled (I'm not sure why since everyone uses a common image). I've tried enabling it via fsutil 8dot3name set 0 (from fsutil file setshortname command-prompt using admin privileges). That command seems to run fine (no error). But when I try actually creating the short name I get: C:\>fsutil file setshortname "Program Files" PROGRA~1 Error: Access is denied. Any thoughts on how to debug this and determine why Windows won't let me add this? Is there an error log I can check somewhere? Update As per request, here's what I see when typing DIR P* /X C:\>DIR P* /X Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is XXXX-XXXX Directory of C:\ 07/13/2009 10:20 PM
