This just happened suddenly with no change in either system. Soft Reset of ipaq and reboot of desktop to no avail. Reinstalled activesync then upgraded activesync. Still nothing. Unplug cable and replug. Still nothing. Hard boot and it works, but if I do system restore, I'm back in the no USB error 604 world. I certainly do not want to have to reinstall all my programs again, but it's looking that way. I sure could use some help. It seems that one of the iPAQ's files that runs the usb activesync program must be corrupted. Is there any way to restore the corrupted file? I've searched everywhere for information assuming it's not just me, but I can't find anything. Start ActiveSync on the PocketPC, and on the menu choose Tools..Options..Enable synchronization ... and select `USB I had this problem when I messed around with the bluetooth executables in the \windows directory. John Pigott, Dec 13, 2002 #2 dunroven Mobile Evangelist Messages: 77 Likes Received: 0 Trophy Points: 11 I have a 3850, so no bluetooth option there. I found three files: usbcnect.exe usbcnect.lnk usb.dll These were in the windows directory on the pocket PC. Wondering if they're corrupt some how and if there is a way to replace them. I still haven't began the process of re-installing all the apps. I just did a restore and am using the serial connection until I hear something positive... Pocket PC displays the error message "Cannot start communications with the desktop computer. Remote Networking could not start due to a critical error (Error 604)". This only occurs with the USB connection, the serial connection still works OK. I have tried: - reconnecting - restarting the device - upgrading Activesync on the PC - connecting to another PC All give the same result. The system has been working fine for about 18 months and has just suddenly started doing this. Top Critical error 604 on Pocket PC when using Activesync via USB by Rob Borek » Fri, 29 Oct 2004 12:30:06 On Wed, 27 Oct 2004 08:47:05 http://forum.brighthand.com/threads/activesync-error-604.163720/ -0700, "wjgreenall" I'm pretty sure you'll have to perform a hard reset - note that you cannot restore from a backup file, because the problem will come right back. Just make sure you move any files off the device before you perform the hard reset. All your data is in Outlook, and all of your programs are under Tools -> Add/Remove Programs, so it shouldn't take you more than a half hour to get everything http://www.yqcomputer.com/888_490_1.htm back in working order (and you'll have a nice, fresh Pocket PC without anything clogging up the registry). If your Pocket PC has a firmware update available, this would be the perfect time to perform it (as firmware upgrades require a hard reset). -- Rob Borek Microsoft MVP - Mobile Devices Want *ONE ON ONE* support? http://www.yqcomputer.com/ Please place all replies into the newsgroup so that others can benefit. Unfortunately, the only thing I've seen work for this error is a hard reset and starting from scratch (don't restore a backup, but do back up your My Documents directory to a storage card) -- Rob Borek Microsoft MVP - Mobile Devices Want *ONE ON ONE* support? http://www.pocketpcone2one.com Please place all replies into the newsgroup so that others can benefit. Rob Borek active sync error [MS MVP], Jan 4, 2005 #2 Advertisements MT Guest Thanks for this but I'd like to avoid that if I can. I'd rather know what the problem is. Error 604 has a meaning. It is frustrating that I can't find it out! I tried disabling USB comms and tried the serial conection. That worked a couple of times but I then started to get the same problem with that. There are some other weird things happening too. It keeps trying to connect via gprs over infrared. I go into Settings>Communications but don't seem to have anything relating to conecting to the PC. Should be there be a specific icon in Comms settings to do with connecting to the PC? Here I go again. I still have not got this thing to sync. It synced as much as two weeks ago and won't any more. I have a IPAQ 3950 and when I go to Sync it gives me an error 604. It says it cannot start communication with the desktop computer due to critical error (Error 604). I looked under the help menu and nothing shows up for Error 604. If anybody knows what to go please reply. I have tried it several times. If you haven't yet upgraded to 3.6, maybe upgrading will clear up the problem. I have upgraded to Active Sync 3.7 and still have the same problem. Have tried two different laptops (work/home) and different USB cables. Restarted (hard) the PDA seveal times and still can not connect. Any ideas what to try next? If I can't sync to Outlook the PDA is useless! Reply With Quote 07-04-2003,07:46 AM #4 joelgee View Profile View Forum Posts Junior Member Join Date Sep 2002 Posts 7 I tried syncing my ipaq 3955 last night and received this message on the ipaq screen: Cannot start communications with the desk top computer. Remote networking could not start due to a critical error (error 604). Oddly, I'd just synced several hours previously with no problems. A soft reset didn't help. Neither did deleting and reloading Activesync on my desktop. I've googled all over the place and can't even find a definition of error 604. Anybody know anything? I'm really confused and frustrated.
