Chris Blair's Blog : Quicktime – Error 46: Could not find or load activex controlI've struggled for months with this error message from Quicktime Player on our main Windows 7 editing system. Quicktime simply would not open no matter what "fixes" were applied from the internet (and

there were plenty "suggested" ones out there). It took me probably 4 or 5 hours activex client across several different days (and attempts) during "down-time" to FINALLY find a "fix" that worked. It appears the REAL problem is that virtually error 46 itunes none of the well-meaning folks who posted fixes can write accurate instructions. I finally found the right mix of instructions from someone who had gone through the same frustrations as I did. What basically happens with this problem http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/get-an-error-that-says-error-46-could-not-load-or/2ca6787e-9fa4-4e09-b7a8-772c765c5423 is that Quicktime's installer somehow messes up permissions on Windows 7, so when you go to run the program, Windows 7 doesn't allow it to start. The problem occurs in the registry across dozens of entries, so fixing it manually is a nightmare, and simply uninstalling the program doesn't delete the registry entries, so they remain borked, even when you reinstall Quicktime. What every online set of instructions leaves out is that you MUST run particular file https://blogs.creativecow.net/blog/13039/quicktime--error-46-could-not-find-or-load-activex-control in Vista compatibility mode before the fix will work. So use the instructions listed at this link: http://gerger.com/mediaart/lab/1006/ But add the following: AFTER you install subinacl.msi, go to C:Program Files (x86)Windows Resource KitsTools and right-click on subinacl.exe and change its compatibility mode to Windows Vista (Service Pack 2). Do the same thing to the reset.cmd file that you downloaded. Every set of instructions on the web leaves out the part about changing the compatibility of the subinacl.exe file, which from all the research I did, isn't a normal Windows 7 component. So by NOT changing the compatibility of the file, it doesn't run right. This is the ONLY way the fix in the link will work properly on Windows 7. Hope this helps someone and saves them from the hours and hours of frustration I went through. While I sincerely appreciate the efforts of others to help people solve computer problems, it drives me crazy how techies are unable to clearly write down the steps necessary to apply a fix. Unfortunately, this inability to write clearly is very common on tech based sites. Quicktime Error 46: Could Not Load or Find QuickTime ActiveX Control in Windows 7 Error 46: Could Not Load or Find QuickTime ActiveX Control in Windows 7 By James T Wood eHow Contributor James T Wood Follow Pin Share Tweet Share Email Save In Windows 7, Error 46 is caused by incorrectly assigned permissions when QuickTime is installed. That means that the operating system either can't access or can't find the QuickTime files necessary to complete the process that is being requested - usually launching QuickTime. You can either repair the permissions or use a different video player. Repair the Error Since the issue causing the Error 46 is that QuickTime registry entries don't have the correct permissions set, the repair is to go and reset all the incorrect permissions. However, this is a long and tedious process. The SubInACL tool from Microsoft (see the link in Resources) can change the permissions as a batch. The batch is defined by a CMD file that lists all of the registry keys to be changed. Once SubInACL is installed on your computer, move the CMD file with all the registry changes into the same folder, typically C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools. Right-click the CMD file, choose "Properties," check "Run this Program in Compatibility Mode" and select "Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)" from the drop-down menu. Click "OK." Do the same for SubInACL. When you're done, double-click on the CMD file and it will run. Your error should be gone. Use an Alternative The main formats that QuickTime plays that are unique are MOV and MP4 files. The MOV file is an Apple video format. You can use several alternatives to QuickTime, including the aptly named QuickTime Alternative, VLC Media Player and MOV Player (see the links in Resources). Download and install the player of your choice and use it to play your QuickTime files. Note that you may need to uninstall QuickTime from your computer. Click "Start" and "Control Panel." Click "Uninstall a Program" under the Programs heading. Select QuickTime from the list and click "Uninstall." Uninstall and Reinstall QuickTime It's possible that the User Account Control in Windows 7 didn't allow the QuickTime installer to make all the changes necessary when the program was initially installed. Click "Start," "Control Panel" and "Uninstall a Program." Select "QuickTime" and click "Uninstall." Wait for the process to complete and then restart your computer. Download the QuickTime installer from Apple's website (link in Resources). Once the file is saved to your c
