The "Not Ready" error message is usually caused adaptec scsi card 39160 by one of the following: The drive doesn't spin up at power on - see options below The drive spins up at power on but doesn't pass it's own self-test - in this case the drive is most likely dead and will need to be serviced. If the drive isn't spinning up at power on it is either dead or it is not set to spin up: Most SCSI hard drives have a jumper to spin up at power on or wait for a "Start Unit" command from the SCSI controller. Configure the drive to spin up at power on. Check the drive manufacturer's documentation for details. Enable the "Send Start Unit Command" option for the SCSI ID of the drive in SCSI Select: Enter SCSISelect by pressing Ctrl-A during the boot sequence when prompted. Choose "Configure / View Host Adapter" Choose "SCSI Device Configuration" In the table of SCSI IDs enable the "Send Start Unit Command" option for the ID of the hard drive you're working with Was this answer helpful? First please make sure that the latest driver and BIOS for the SCSI Controller is installed. Check the download area for the latest versions. If the device attached is a 80-pin SCA Disk Drive, please see Answer ID 511. If the device attached is a tape drive, tape library, or scanner change the following settings in the SCSISelect (BIOS) Utility: Enter SCSISelect by pressing "Ctrl-A" during the boot sequence of the system. On SCSI Controllers with 2 channels, select the appropriate channel. Go to "Configure/View Host Adapter Settings". If the SCSI Controller does not have the system boot device attached, disable the BIOS. On SCSI Controllers with 2 channels, the BIOS of the channel that does not have the boot device, can be disabled. To do this, go to "Advanced Configuration" and set "SCSI Controller Int 13 Support" to "Disabled". If you boot from a SCSI device attached with the SCSI controller, leave the SCSI Controller Int 13 Support" at "Enabled". Under "Advanced
Adaptec 7 series and SATA disks problem Reported by: szj Owned by: somebody Priority: major Milestone: Component: all Version: 6.1 Keywords: Cc: Description Hi, There is a problem with monitoring SATA disks on Adaptec https://www.smartmontools.org/ticket/278 7 series. I have identical Seagate SAS drives, Corsair Force GS SSD's http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/aic7xxx/1998-March/000776.html and WDC SATA drives connected to Adaptec 6805 and Adaptec 71605 in another machine. All is fine on the machine with the 6805. On the machine with the 71605 the SAS drives work fine, but there is a problem with SATA drives. I tested various versions of adaptec scsi smartmontools available in Debian and it's always the same. Smartd refuses to monitor the drives, claiming it can't enable SMART: smartd[17562]: Device: /dev/sg7 [SAT], opened smartd[17562]: Device: /dev/sg7 [SAT], WDC WD4000FYYZ-01UL1B0, S/N:WD-WCC130248974, WWN:5-0014ee-25d6165c4, FW:01.01K01, 4.00 TB smartd[17562]: Device: /dev/sg7 [SAT], found in smartd database: Western Digital RE4 (SATA 6Gb/s) smartd[17562]: Device: /dev/sg7 [SAT], could not enable SMART capability.
