However I get this annoying, non-descriptive error: I'm looking to find out if Microsoft Virtual PC supports Windows 8, and if so how do I solve this issue? NOTE: I'm NOT trying to ask for alternatives to Virtual PC, but rather trying to figure out if it's possible, and if so how, to use Virtual PC. windows-7 microsoft-virtual-pc windows-8 share|improve this question edited Aug 17 '12 at 20:21 Tom Wijsman 45.7k19143227 asked Sep 14 '11 at 20:24 KronoS 17.9k3390145 2 I'd say "HAL INITIALIZATION FAILED" is descriptive, if not terribly good at narrowing it down. :) –Shinrai Sep 14 '11 at 20:42 12 gotta love the new-style BSOD –Sathya♦ Sep 15 '11 at 5:06 possible duplicate of Which virtual machine software is preferable for running Windows 8 Developer Preview? –Ƭᴇcʜιᴇ007 Sep 15 '11 at 13:12 1 @techie007 I've added a note to caution users to answer the actual question I'm shooting for, and not the dupe. –KronoS Sep 15 '11 at 16:20 1 Do we need to coin a new acronym for the new version of the BSOD? been running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 under VirtualPC (with SP1) on an XP pro SP2 system. It was working ok, but I recently ran up2date on the linux box, which upgraded some of the software, and now I have a problem. Whenever I get to the point where linux tries to switch to graphical display mode, the VirtualPC gets an error: "An internal virtual machine error (13) has occurred." and "The virtual machine will reset now." Charles F McDevitt, Jul 15, 2005 #1 Advertisements Norman Diamond Guest It sounds like up2date changed your X11 driver. Boot to run level 3, login in text mode, and run your X11 configurator again. Some people have luck using X11's S3 driver with 16-bit pixels, some use X11's http://superuser.com/questions/335654/is-it-possible-to-install-windows-8-using-microsoft-virtual-pc generic VESA driver with 32-bit pixels, and I use VESA but forgot how many bpp. The default X11 S3 driver setting is 24 bpp, which the Virtual PC product doesn't properly emulate. For some reason, I can't use 1600x1200 resolution any more or it blows out the VM. I can get it to boot 1024x768 (16 bits per pixel), which is better than nothing, but doesn't work well with my monitor. I can get the game to boot up on my netbook with 1GB of RAM. It just runs so slow that it's unplayable, but it'd still boot up. The problem is clearly not a lack of RAM, plus 2GB is enough to run the game, I have plenty of friends with builds that util
