I want to have my old school big ass application has stopped assert dialog box back, with a big "DEBUG" button. I have JIT completely enabled in Visual Studio's options and settings, so I'm not sure why I'm not getting the option. visual-studio-2005 windows-7 jit share|improve this question asked May 20 '10 at 15:54 Charles Randall 1,04021832 Is your app built in Release or Debug mode? –Adam Lear♦ May 20 '10 at 15:58 I've tried both. –Charles Randall May 20 '10 at 17:19 Is this a managed program, or a native program? –Eric Brown Jun 3 '10 at 16:42 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 5 down vote accepted This blog post on raymond.cc contains an expanded version of the steps suggested in Krzysztof John's answer. This works on Windows Vista and above. Open the Registry Editor by typing regedit into the Start search box or the Win+R Run dialog. The OS will not terminate a process just because it's unresponsive to "window messages" for whatever reason. When that's the extent of the problem, you tend to see the app UI lock up, accompanied by a "not responding" label in Task Manager. "Application has stopped working" is the nice way of saying "has crashed". The OS notices when the app unintentionally does things which are impossible - division by zero, accessing memory which doesn't belong to it... that sort of thing. If the app cannot recover when such an attempt is caught (it doesn't provide a suitable "exception handler"), then the inevitable result is an outright crash. Try updating 3DSMax, your video driver, and stay away from "desktop enhancers/extenders" and similar utilities which could conceivably mess with the app UI rendering.
