app is relaunched or the Mac has been rebooted. By the way, if you experience exactly that, it's a good indicator of what's really going on… the password is probably entered incorrectly somewhere, or not being saved. Whatever the case, if you're having the repetitive ‘enter password' message in the OS X Mail app, read on and you should have it fixed in no time. 1: Double-Check the Password is Correct First, and this may be sound silly and you're probably already annoyed by the suggestion, but be absolutely sure you are actually entering the correct password. That means checking your caps lock key to see if it's on or off when it shouldn't be, making sure all characters are entered exactly as intended. For example, if the email password is "Pepperoni@Pizza" but you're entering "pepperoni@pizza" it's not going to work due to the difference in casing. asks for passwords 6 Replies When using Mail for accessing your e-mail, you might run into a problem where Mail repeatedly asks for your password, either when you are checking https://www.macissues.com/2014/09/03/what-to-do-if-mail-constantly-asks-for-passwords/ for new messages (such as when opening Mail for the first time), or http://www.noproblemmac.com/blog/2012/04/23/why-does-mac-mail-keep-asking-for-my-password/ when attempting to send messages. This can be frustrating to deal with if it happens, but if it does there are several things you can do to fix the situation. Toggle your internet off and on Use this menu to disable Wi-Fi, and then re-enable it. Often Mail prompting for a password is asking for from its inability to properly connect to your service provider. This can happen if you have lost your connection in the midst of communicating, so try toggling your Wi-Fi or other network connections off and then back on, to see if this helps the situation. Wait a short while It may be instinctive to try entering your password repeatedly in the authentication window that pops up, followed keeps asking for by clicking the "Get Mail" button to ensure it takes; however, while worth one try, if the password box pops up again, then this approach is likely a waste of time. Sometimes odd problems with mail account servers can prevent authentication for a short while, so if this happens, consider waiting about 10-15 minutes before trying again. Quit and relaunch Mail In addition to waiting, quit and relaunch Mail to see if the problem is simply a temporary fault with how Mail's configuration has loaded. Ensure the password is correct While passwords should be stored in your Mac's keychain, if you have entered the password again and then re-saved it in your keychain, then you might have simply entered it incorrectly. Therefore, try again and ensure you have put in the right password. Clear or update your keychain Open the Keychain Access utility, and search for the affected e-mail account (username and domain) to locate any keychain entries used for accessing this service. Select any relevant ones (especially if there are duplicates), and delete them from your keychain. Following this, go back to Mail and supply your password when prompted, and choose the option to save t
CONTACT US ABOUT Why Does Mail Keep Asking For My Password? by John Carroll on April 23, 2012 Click To Share With FriendsAlmost everyone who owns a Mac encounters the pop-up box requesting a password for Mail. It seems to appear and disappear without rhyme or reason. So, why does this keep happening? Behind The Scenes Mac Mail, like Outlook and Entourage, must contact an external mail server in order to send and receive your email. Mac Mail checks with the server constantly to see if you have new mail. If the mail server is down for maintenance, momentarily offline or overwhelmed with requests, it rejects the request from Mac Mail. As the most common reason for a server rejection is an incorrect password, Mac Mail mistakenly assumes this is why it’s been rejected and immediately places a box on your screen requesting a password. What Happens If I Type in My Password? Nothing, if you type it in correctly. If you misspell the password or type in the wrong password, the password request box will continue to pop-up… because now you really do have a password problem. How To Fix A Password Problem? If you continue to get the password request for more than thirty minutes it’s possible that you have a missing or incorrect password. First, you need to do a quick test: Send an email to yourself using the email address of the Mail box that is causing problems. You will get one of four results. Checking the Sent mailbox shows the test email has been sent, but you never receive it. This indicates a problem with the Incoming Mail settings. The test email sits in your outbox and refuses to send. During this time you have no problem receiving emails from other sources. This indicates a problem with the Outgoing Mail settings. The test email sits in your inbox and refuses to send and you receive no email from any other sources. This indicates a problem with both the Incoming and Outgoing Mail settings. You receive the test email. Congratulations, you don’t have a problem 🙂 Now you know which area you need to fix. Fixing The Incoming Mail Password In Mail, click on the Mail menu and select Preferences. Select the Account that you are having problems with. Choose the Account Information tab. Click on the box for Password and enter your password. If necessary, overtype the password that is already there. Click on the red button in the top left-hand corner to close the box. Yo
