Error Pages Asp.net Mvc

you're not alone. It's surprisingly difficult to do this correctly, not helped by the fact that some errors are handled by ASP.NET and others by IIS. Ideally (and aspnet mvc nuget I expect such is the case with some other frameworks/servers) we would aspnet mvc source just configure our custom error pages in one place and it would just work, no matter how/where the error was

404 HTTP status code. Ideally we should return something a little friendlier to our site visitors than the error pages built in to ASP.NET/IIS, perhaps offering some advice on why the resource may not exist or providing an option to search the site. For the purposes of this blog post, my custom 404 page is very simple, but you can see some really nice examples aspnet mvc 4 here.
404 Page Not Found
I created a new ASP.NET MVC 5 application using the standard template in Visual Studio. If I run the site and try to navigate to a resource that does not exist e.g. /foo/bar, I'll get the standard ASP.NET 404 page with the following information: Server Error in '/' Application. The resource cannot be found. Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly. Requested URL: /foo/bar Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:4.0.30319; ASP.NET Version:4.0.30319.33440 Not exactly friendly, is it? In this case the error was raised by ASP.NET MVC because it could not find a matching controller and/or action that matched the specified URL. Instead of it displaying the generic Resource Not Found ASP.NET error... I don't want to use the web config to handle this. Is there any kind of routing magic I can do to catch any invalid URLs? Update: I tried the answer given... however I still get the ugly resource not found message. Another update OK. Apparently something changed in RC1.. I've even tried specifically trapping 404 on an HttpException and it still just gives http://stackoverflow.com/questions/553922/custom-asp-net-mvc-404-error-page me the resource not found page. I've even used mvcContrib's resource's feature and nothing. Same problem... Any ideas anyone? Just do this..." But I'd suggest that if there is nothing stopping you from using the web.config approach and it satisfies your needs, it is a standard and elegant approach. Any feedback on that approach is appreciated, as there very well could be some issue with it that I don't know about. –Sean Jan 25 '12 at 19:53 Related: How can I properly handle 404 in ASP.NET MVC? –kenorb May 25 '15 at 9:47 | show 2 more comments 9 Answers 9 active oldest votes up vote 6 down v
