The common causes seem to be: 1) Adobe Shockwave (disable the add-on) 2) Google Desktop Search (uninstall it) 3) a conflict with Lotus Notes (???) If it's not one of those for you, try Start > All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons). After installing all the necessary updates from the last 3 years, I was current with my OS version (SP2). Only after doing this was I able to update my internet browser to IE9.
