From time to time when running VBA on an excel tool that my team is building, Excel will crash and the "Microsoft has stopped working" pop-up will appear and when the user selects the 'close the program' option another pop-up stating "Automation Error Exception Occurred" appears. Now here is where it gets weird: It only happens on the machines excel vba automation error catastrophic failure running 2007, 2010 and 2013 machines never have this issue. Only happens every couple weeks (every 3-5 versions of the tool). These same machines have been running and testing the tool all day every day up until the point it occurs. There is no noticeable difference between the versions that work and those that don't from a code perspective. The have been several instances where a machine will run the VBA code fine and suddenly the error will start occurring. Once, a 2007 machine encounters the error, that file will never work on that machine or any other 2007 machine again. BUT, if given a fresh copy of the same exact file, sometimes the problem will disappear. after some online review, I have tracked the error down to three references being used: OLE Automation, Microsoft Office 12.0 Object Library, Microsoft CDO for Windows 200 Library. If any of these three are disabled in any combination the VBA will start running bug-free. My questions are: What could cause an error that would allow a tool to work a dozen times on a machine (with or without changes being saved) and suddenly stop running and never run again until replaced with a fresh copy? What possible interactions between the three above refe

I'm confused because it only crashes when I have other programs running while attempting to run the macro. Right now, I have 2 Internet Explorer windows, Outlook, and one other program open. If I try to run the macro Excel crashes. If I close all those other programs, the macro runs fine. The macro involves opening a file on the network, copying all cells, pasting them to a specific worksheet within the workbook, then closing the workbook I copied from. It does this about ten times. It always crashes while trying to close the 2nd workbook (Workbooks("Allport.xls").Close). VB: Sub UpdateSMAModel() ' ' Application.ScreenUpdating = False Application.DisplayAlerts = False RB = ActiveWorkbook.Name ChDir "P:\Portfolios\SMA" Workbooks.Open Filename:="P:\Portfolios\SMA\SMAModel.xls" Cells.Select Selection.Copy Windows(RB).Activate Sheets("SMA Model Hard Coded").Select Range("A1").Select Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteValues, Operation:=xlNone, S

I have narrowed my problem down to this: Code: Sub Tester() Dim MyDialog As FileDialog Set MyDialog = Application.FileDialog(msoFileDialogSaveAs) End Sub When I execute this code with excel vba automation a workbook open (like the default Book1), this works fine. If I close all workbooks and execute this code, then I get the following error: Automation error Exception occurred. Then the windows error reporting system chimes in with "Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close." and the application closes. I can post the details of the error report if it would help, but otherwise I'll spare you. The error does not occur with the other three types of file dialog (FilePicker, FolderPicker, Open). I want to use this as part of a larger macro that will create a new workbook with certain parameters that I specify, and I need the SaveAs dialog to be able to create a new file. I'd like it to run regardless of whether other workbooks are open. Any ideas? If you need the save as dialog to show up, why not create a template with your parameters, then copy it as... Or even just open a new workbook first within your ma
Control Microsoft Office for Developers > Excel for Developers Question 0 Sign in to vote Hello all, one of our partner companies developed a custom Excel-solution for one of their customers, which was running fine for several years under Excel 2003.When their customer upgraded to Office 2010 they askedfor the solution to use the new file formats. But when upgrading to the .xlsx or .xlsb-Fileformats the solution crashes Excel at inconsistent times - no error message (except once), excel stops working and the process needs to be killed. One of the main oddities while trying to identify the problem is, that Excel won't crash when in debug-mode. So there is no chance of finding the line of code that causes the trouble. In the Workbook_Open Event-procedure a user form is opened. Sometimes Excel crashes when trying to open the userform. Sometimes it crashes later, when switching between the pages of the multipage control which resides on the userform. It never crashes when bypassing the opening of the userform. But Excel also crashes when opening the userform using for examplea buttonControl on a worksheet. So far we havenarrowed down the problem to the userform. But not further. Some posts from the internet suggest, that the problem occurs only in combination with the MultipageControl. And some even say that it has to do with the limited number of controls that a multipage control can handle. But the hole solution and especially the userform is far to complex to solve the problem by changing the design (like avoiding the multipage-control or the user form at all). So we are hoping, that there is an explanation forwhat exactly the problem is. Without identifiying the root cause, we see little chance in finding a workaround in reasonable time. Also some of our tests suggest, that the power/speed of the hardware influences the instability. On faster computers with absolutely the same Windows and Office Version as the slower ones Excel will crash far more often. Maybe a similar "Speed"-cause is, why the crash does not happen when in debug-mode. Any hints or suggestions for help are very welcome. Thanks in advance. P.S.: The Problem seems identical or at least is very similar to the Proble
