It contains some forms as well as numerous modules of VBA code. However, when removing the forms (and associated code) everything is fine. The same thing happened about a year ago after some other windows automation error unspecified updates. Back then deleting the .exd files did the trick, but the current updates (including Service Pack 3) seem to be different. What is going on and how can I get the forms to work? All the code is unchanged and has survived all previous windows/office updates. Running Windows 7 (same happening on Vista machine) and Office 2007. windows excel vba ms-office windows-update share|improve this question asked Aug 15 '12 at 14:38 Rob 4343716 add a comment| 11 Answers 11 active oldest votes up vote 16 down vote accepted I used to see this a lot with Visual Basic and Crystal Reports; either due to a bad deployment or DLL Hell. So, my guess is that it's not the code but perhaps some 3rd party controls (OCXs, DLLs) you're using. Check your References (In VBA IDE, click Tools and References) and to see where each DLL is pointing. See if any of the dates on the libraries are different than a working machine and you may find the culprit. Edit The OP found the problem by following the steps above. The fix for this particular issue is to unregister mscomctl.ocx: regsvr32 /u mscomctl.ocx Then register it: regsvr32 mscomctl.ocx share|improve this
AMI have an application which is developped in Excel XP. I have a user which has excel 2000 installed. The application loads as an add-in, and works fine in XP. However when loading in Excel 2000 I get the error: Automation Error - Unspecified Error. It seems that the code breaks at the first statement of the Workbook_Open event. Any ideas on how to get more info on why the automation error occurs? Timbo02-14-2007, 10:08 AMTake a look in your VB Project References list to see if there's one prefixed with "MISSING:". If so, de-select it then re-compile the project. LeifGund02-14-2007, 10:33 AMI don't see any Missing references, but I know that there should be some, because the original project references the Office10 library, which is not on the Excel 2000 pc. Do you think that could be an issue, even though it does not appear in the references list? Mike Rosenblum02-14-2007, 03:53 PMUgh, this stuff is the worst... I feel for you bro. :( I would make a copy of it and save the original somewhere safe, because you might have butcher the copy to figure out what is going wrong. Once you backed up, I would first try a full compile of the Project. Does it complain anywhere. It "should", but, well, it might not... In general from here I would start off by removing and/or commenting out stuff. I know that your projects are rather large, so this could be a pain, but I would consider commenting out every single module 100% except for this one Workbook_Open() event. And comment out the code within that event as well except for one line, a MsgBox that reports that the event was called. If it doesn't run with even a minimalist amount of code in it, then you must have some sort of corruption, or bad reference or something. If the minimalist approach does run, then try un-commenting out one section at a time. Somewhere it should complain... This is how I would ge about it. Some of the other experts around here might have more directy approaches, I don't know, but this is how I go about tracking down "mysterious bugs" of this nature. Mike LeifGund02-15-2007, 07:50 AMThanks for the help. I will try to cut it all the way down to see if I can find what is wrong. Does anyone know if there generally are problems using applications developped in say Excel xp, in earlier versions of Excel???? Thanks, Mike Rosenblum02-1
