Worksheet_Activate? up vote 2 down vote favorite 2 I have a worksheet named "Dates" (object name is A_Dates) that needs to be calculated when it is activated (It may be worth noting that this is in my Personal macro workbook). I regularly have workbooks open that have too many calculations in the for me to have auto-calculation on. So I have auto-calc set to manual, and the vba automation error the object has disconnected from its client following code in the worksheet: Private Sub Worksheet_Activate() A_Dates.Calculate End Sub This has worked fine for the last 3 months, day-in and day-out. Yesterday, it stopped working. It now throws this error on the declaration line: Microsoft Visual Basic Automation error Unspecified error [OK] [Help] I have tried changing how I reference the sheet, using: Sheets("Dates").Calculate and ActiveSheet.Calculate to no avail. I've also included error handling: On Error Resume Next which doesn't prevent it. I've even gone so far as: Private Sub Worksheet_Activate() On Error GoTo headache Sheets("Dates").Calculate Exit Sub headache: Exit Sub End Sub and it still shows up. I am totally at a loss. Help? There may have been a recent update that is causing these issues. http://www.excelforum.com/showthread.php?t=856532 All of them are getting an error either when opening Excel or when working on VBA: Microsoft Visual Basic --------------------- Automation error Unspecified error One of my users cannot save files either; it throws an error that unfortunately I have not written down. Has anyone seen similar behavior and can point me in the right direction? Turns out you need to un-register and re-register the mscomctl.ocx file. Jon Peltier Peltier Technical Services, Inc., Copyright © 2016. In recent months I have encountered a particularly troublesome error. It occurs in Excel 2003 and 2007 http://peltiertech.com/unspecified-painfully-frustrating-error/ (and perhaps in earlier versions, but I don't recall any such cases). The error is heralded by an unusually unhelpful error message, even my Microsoft's standards: Microsoft Visual Basic - System https://techsupport.osisoft.com/Troubleshooting/KB/KB00686 Error &H80004005 (-2147467259). Unspecified error. Pardon my French, but WTF? To rub salt into the wound, this is followed up with an Out of Memory error: Sometimes these occur once, automation error sometimes twice, when Excel is started, when a workbook with code is opened, or when an add-in is opened. Association with RefEdit Controls Closer examination sheds some light on the problem. It seems to be related to our old friend, the RefEdit control. If a workbook or add-in has a UserForm with a RefEdit, this error may occur. When the vba automation error error occurs, it may be impossible to view the UserForm in the VB Editor, or if the UserForm can be viewed, any RefEdits have been stripped off the form. UserForms without RefEdit controls can be viewed with no problems. On a computer that experiences the problem, the RefEdit library (refedit.dll) is not available in the references under the VB Editor's Tools menu, and sometimes it turns up as a MISSING reference in this list. The RefEdit library is also not found in the list of Additional Controls which can be added to the VBE's Controls Toolbox. If the RefEdit control had been present on the Controls Toolbox, its place may be taken by a gray square with a tooltip of "Unknown". Interestingly enough, the RefEdit library is present on the machine, in the Microsoft Office program directory. But the library is apparently not accessible. There have been some recent changes in the RefEdit control, I believe on more than one occasion, but I have never documented the changes. There are no outwardly visible differences in the control, but the file siz

Email: KB00686 - Fixing "Automation Error" in Excel after applying MS12-060 Product: PI BatchView / PI DataLink / PI Tag Configurator Version(s): Multiple Platform: Windows Issue If you have already applied the Microsoft patch MS12-060, you may see the error "Automation Error: Unspecified Error" or "System Error &H8000FFF (-2147418113). Catastrophic failure" when starting Microsoft Excel. When closing Excel with PI DataLink enabled, you may also see the error "Compile error in hidden module: modAddin." Solution Typically, these errors can be resolved by searching for and deleting all *.exd files on the machine (including hidden files) as described in KB00804. In some cases, the fix for this problem is to re-register MSCOMCTL.OCX. To do this, follow the steps noted in the Microsoft article "Unspecified Automation Error" after applying MS12-060.
