Error Message Unable to update backup exec 2010 export selection list the restore items. The job cannot be submitted because the number of selections exceeds the maximum amount allowed by Backup Exec Cause If the backup Selection List contains more than 100 individually selected items (around 200KB), the size of the selection list grows when it contains many files with long paths and metadata. This will cause the error "Unable to update the restore items. The job cannot be submitted because the number of selections exceeds the maximum amount allowed by Backup Exec" to be seen. Solution Workaround : Create multiple jobs with smaller selection lists. OR Change the Value of HKLM\Software\Symantec\Backup Exec for Windows\Backup Exec\Server = MaxRpcDatablockSize to 5242880 to disable the selection list limit. Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes. Open the Registry Editor (Click Start > Run > type regedt32) on the Media Server.Browse to the following path:HKEY_Local_Machine\S

I just tried to create a new backup job using the wizard. After I got through all of the steps and hit finish I get an error that reads "Unable to create https://vox.veritas.com/t5/Backup-Exec/Unable-to-create-selection-list/td-p/348064 selections list". I was reading through some older forums and ran the BEUtility.exe and did a database consistency check which can back fine. I also ran a restore job which did complete. I am curious to see what happens when my scheduled incrementals run tonight. Not sure what else to do. Solved! Go to Solution. I was cinfiguring Symantec Backup Exec 12.5d for a client of mine. It turns out that they had a large number of exclusions in their backup job. Normally this is not a problem but since Symantec Backup Exec 11d, Symantec have added a little security feature that does not let the selection list xml file grow beyond 200KB. The Symantec knowledge base article can be found here: http://support.veritas.com/docs/286488 http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/302048.htm The article mentions that the "issue" has been fixed with a hotfix for Backup Exec 11d, however, I have a fully patched installation and the error still occurs, also, if this was an acknowledged "issue" why is this still a problem in Backup Exec 12.5?? Anyway, for those of you who need to fix this without installing the hotfix or could be one of the select few, like me, who have the hotfix installed but still can't create large selection lists, perform the following steps: Click on Start then select Run Enter regedt32 then click OK Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Server] Create a new DWORD called = MaxRpcDatablockSize The value of the key should be = ffffffff After making the change, restart your Backup Exec services.
