records). DNS normally responds to queries on UDP port 53, however, for large queries such as zone transfers,

TCP port 53 is used. Because DNS is hierarchical it is possible to query a DNS server about records that server may not actually possess. In these cases the request

is forwarded to a server that can respond to the query. Because of this indirection, DNS lookups are a form of passive reconnaissance and these queries often escape unnoticed by a target. The easiest way to collect full DNS data sets about a target URL is to simply perform a zone transfer request. A zone transfer request queries the DNS nslookup server for it's entire listing of URLs and corresponding IP information. Zone transfers are somewhat more intensive than normal DNS queries, so multiple concurrent zone transfers may induce a denial of service condition against a target. Note that sometimes your default name server may not allow zone transfers so you might have to send your query to the authoritative name server for a domain. Queries from Windows To perform a zone transfer on Windows use the 'nslookup' command. In the following example we'll attempt a zone transfer from wikipedia.org. To start well fire up nslookup from the command prompt, this will begin nslookup interactively: C:\> nslookup Default Server: NS1.madirish.net Address: 10.0.0.5 > Once nslookup is started you can type 'help' to see all of the commands that are available. First we'll set the query type to "any", meaning that we want to get all records for an associated domain. You could also set the type to "mx" to view mail servers for a domain, or "ns" to view name servers, and so on. > set type=any Next

If this is the authoritative server (the one referenced by the DNS record via whois), check the spelling of your DNS record for a bad error value misspelling. If this server is not authoritative, and it works on the authoritative one, then this server has old data or corrupted data. Many DNS servers are set to not allow zone transfers anymore due to abuse. I have also seen other messages from ISP servers with "BAD ERROR VALUE" that seem to have zone transfers disabled, too. ...There are more, but I do not generally see them. Below is URL to the specification: http://www.iana.org/assignments/dns-parameters In addition, for NSLookup queries, if the DNS server is unreachable: the server is down, the DNS service/server is down, or there is a network issue, then the message back from NSLookup is: Timed-Out. If you get "Non-existent" domain as NSLookup is starting, then the issue is that the default DNS server for your workstation does not have a reverse pointer (PTR) re

Right now I have my domain DNS records hosted with one ISP, and I want to move them to another. I want to make sure all the entries get moved, so any A and MX records for mycompany.com, and if there's subdomains such as www for http://www.mycompany.com, or whatever such as someoddwepage for http://someoddwebpage.mydomain.com or maybe an MX record for a subdomain such as mailserver2.mycompany.com. I'm going to look through the documentation that's maintained for all this, but to be safe I was hoping there's some way through NSHOOKUP or NSLOOKUP to query the ISP's DNS records for my domain to be sure that I don't miss anything. Realize this isn't a Netware specific question...
