Fixed this once when I read the virus software may be causing it. Uninstalled and reinstalled and system was OK for a while. Then installed an HP printer (on HP Pavilion) and started hearing grinding noises and getting blue screen again. Uninstalled printer and things went well for a while but started hearing occasional and random grinding noises in tower. Ran check disk and HD is OK. Ran virus scan in safe mode, OK there also. Seems to get worse after Windows automatically updates. Now my AOL software will not load. Crashes as soon as it gets to contacting the modem. No problems with modem in device manager and uninstalled it and rebooted and still getting the crash. Have completely uninstalled and removed AOL software and McAfee software and reinstalled. Leary about backing up files and doing a reinstall of Windows. Wondering if buying a Windows 7 upgrade would fix the problem without trying to save files. I know I need to back up but I have not had a chance to really go through my files to eliminate duplicates, etc. Will do that later. Just want the security of having the dial-up backup, so wanting the least painful way to get my system working again. I need to restore back to several months ago and don't know how to do it. Reports: · Posted 5 years ago Top raphoenix Posts: 14920 This post has been reported. RiversideNurse72, Can't restore to a non-existent point. The machine needs to be Clean Installed OR Clean Factory Restored from the reserved partition. Not sure about the noise you are hearing but may require a new hard drive. Don't try to upgrade to Win7 over the top of a Bad existing system. Regards, Rick P.
