Windows Vista Blank Screen
to install a vista update which fails everytime. They get me to delete various temporary files as well as renaming certain folders windows vista blank screen on startup to .old. We then start in safe mode, disable nearly everything in startup and services then reboot as normal. After attempting to install the update (which failed!!), and subsequent re-boot I get the the black sceen with windows vista blank screen after login mouse pointer. Horrified, I tell the tech support guy what has happened. He tells me to hit F8, boot in safe mode (no joy) and then with last known good configuration. No change. He then tells me it is nothing to do with what he'd instructed me to do and tells me to contact the PC OEM and hangs up, leaving me with an issue that is clearly a known microsoft problem....

Neither ctrl-alt-del or ctrl-shift-esc do anything. core 2 duo 6400 3GB Ram Nvidia GS7900 No idea of vista build No. Thursday, February 07, 2008 2:24 AM Answers 7 Sign in to vote Hello,I had this problem on the same machine. The first time it happened, I reinstalled vista after much debugging and diagnosing. Then it happened again. This thread is awesome and led me to the event viewer corruption. (thanks kzsmtkts!) That was definitely the problem for me and saved me another reinstall. Here's what I found:1) Seems that this issue may have multiple causes but deals with a logon issue/hangup. 2) Even safe mode was a problem (if safe mode works, then it is probably not the event viewer corruption issue).3) I used the Shift 5 times trick to get a explorer open but other things didn't work. (This also seemed to key into a corrupt event log or possibly a registry corruption). However system restore should have taken care of the registry corruption and probably logon would have failed entirely.4) I could not open services.msc, regedit, etc.
