1 Message Accepted Solution by:amerrigan2011-05-19 The Error 36 is either a mechanical problem (head carriage assembly) or loose part. This is most often caused by ripped paper or a paper jam which results in a sensor issue. Could also be a foreign object like a paper clip in the printer. You'll pretty much have to unplug this and look for the object/paper jam to fix this, If there isn't one I'm afraid it's a maintaince call to Brother (or one of their agents). 0 LVL 10 Overall: Level 10 Printers and Scanners 10 Message Expert Comment by:David_Ingledew2011-05-19 I think with these you can check the from paper feed, rear door but also check the cartridges (remove & replace them) due to the way they feed paper - and look for ripped paper, staples or a large build up of paper dust. Some papers are better than others - if this continues switch supplier. 0 LVL 1 Overall: Level 1 Printers and Scanners 1 Message Expert Comment by:ggc22011-05-19 If nothing is blocking the printhead, you might also want to look at the encoder strip. It is a transparant film strip about 1 cm in height and runs from left to

Expert 41 Answers Re: I have an error "unable to print 36" on my If caused by a paper jam you had it probably lifted the long, thin, plastic encoder strip in the pathway out of its slot, giving the false indication of a paper jam. In order to put it back in its place, please carry out the following steps: 1) Lift the cover and remove the two plastic panels covering wires. Mark down the position of cables, then remove them, and remove the now-freed top scanner section entirely. 2) Remove the screws from the top plastic shell. There's two in the back and four in the front. There's also two plastic tabs in the front that must be bent aside before you can remove the top shell. 3) Gently put the encoder strip back in its plastic guide, and check if you are able to get your printer to work all right thereafter. If you are not comfortable carrying out the steps, I would strongly suggest you to have it repaired by your local Brother service center, without causing further complications. An initial purge, for example, advances the purge counter by 187 420 = 607. When the purge counter approaches 6400, an internal "Machine Error 46" is generated. Further purge operations are prohibited, and therefore the printer becomes unusable. When an internal Machine Error 46 is generated, the user will see an "Unable to Clean" external message and will be unable to use the printer. The "Unable to Clean" external message can relate to many different internal error codes however. The user can establish the internal Machine Error Code as follows: unplug the unit, hold down the Menu/Set key, re-insert the power plug while holding down the Menu/Set key
