The FIXYA ****, as usual is just 'that' - **** - it has instructions brother mfc 8480 for MILLIONS of different printers and they are just trying to sell Advertising - so you have to WADE THROUGH S**T to get to the real answer, which often is WRONG - as in this case - on Fixya, the instructions, when you search for "drum error 8480dn" say "Open the front cover and press the Options button and choose Yes to the prompt about replacing/resetting the drum" - only there IS *NO* OPTIONS BUTTON ON THE 8480DN model - instead, Open the front cover. Press the Clear/Back button AND the Menu button at the same time Choose "Yes" when prompted to replace/reset the drum life count Close the front cover. Done! Even BROTHER DOES *NOT* HAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS, because they hope you do what we have been doing - see these continual DRUM ERRORS and then just REPLACE THE *ENTIRE* PRINTER! This is CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT material against Brother! Let's sue them! Thanks. I usually find this error on machines that are used in dirty environments, use third-party or compatible toners, and on machines where the customer didn't replace the drum when the machine called for it. In this article I'd like to talk about a few of the things I noticed to hopefully resolve your issues on your machine.First, thing to try is to clean the corona wire and charge grid area. Whenever you replace a toner cartridge you are supposed to take the blue tab on top of the drum unit and run it back and forth across the corona wire 5 to 10 times. When I clean a customers machine I use a damp Q-tip and gentle swipe it across the corona wire a few times, this seems to work better than the blue tab. Also, I blow out the charge grid if I find it really dirty. Some times this will fix your drum error problems. I'd say about 50% of the time it fixes it, the other times you have to replace the drum or reset the counter. A lot of times when I get called out to work on a machine that has a drum error I arrive on site and ask the customer what they have done. Majority of the time they say they cleaned the corona wire and some times have changed the drum unit. However, most forget to do the most important step and that is resetting the drum counter. I've found on a lot of these drum errors the only way to clear the message is to reset the counter so make sure before you give up all hope you have completed the last and most important step and fixing this problem. Service Manual Advice and Drum Reset Procedure 1. Clean the Corona Wire in the Drum Unit, Clean the electrodes of the main body and the drum unit. See picture below. 2. Replace the Drum Unit with a new one and Reset the Counter. 3. Charge HVPS PCB failure, replace if needed. 4.
