Specifically, the Brother MFC-8660DN. It supports duplex printing (printing on both sides) and has an ethernet card allowing it to serve as a network printer. It's a great device. However, since it's a laser https://plus.google.com/104285621479461978047/posts/BogyGa7BHST printer, the replacement toner cartridges can be almost as expensive as the printer itself, with http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/posts/37597 most places charging $70-$80 for "new" toner cartridges, or up to $100 for the "genuine" Brother replacement cartridges. The "Cartridge World" shop down the street charges a similarly unreasonable $71.90 for a refilled cartridge. You give them your empty one (along with over $70 of your money), and they give you a refilled one for the same cost as a brother mfc "new" one! Not a very compelling business plan, imho, but apparently SOME people are falling for it.Needless to say, we didn't pay that much when it was time to order replacement toner a couple years ago. We found a seller on Amazon who sells refilled/remanufactured toner cartridges for less than $20. We bought a twin pack, and while the first one worked great, it just recently ran out and we swapped in the second one.Nada. brother mfc 8660dn "Toner Life End", our MFC-8660DN authoritatively proclaimed, just as it had after the previous one used its last bit of toner. I took the toner cartridge out and confirmed it was the new one. It was indeed heavy with toner. I inserted it again. "Toner Life End."Like hell. I then spent 20 minutes inserting and re-inserting the older cartridge, the newer one, the original one, giving each of them the old "shake and fake" routine to try to squeeze a few more pages of printing out of them. The empty ones were indeed completely empty, so that didn't work (I had probably already USED the "shake and fake" routine on them previously), but what galled me was that the FULL one also failed. The printer was convinced it was out of toner when it clearly wasn't.So I did some research and discovered that these devices often use several different methods for determining when they need to be replaced. Some use optical sensors that look into the tube holding the toner, declaring they are "empty" once the light levels hit a certain threshold. (You can apparently fake those out by covering the sensors.) Some use tiny computer chips that simply count the number of pages printed and declare the cartridge at end of life once it reaches a number which the manufacturer has estimated

I've unplugged and restarted, removed drum and cartridge and reinstalled --and it still says same thing and won't print or scan! When I try to scan it says check cable. It will send faxes. This is the third time I've replaced the cartridge (with a refill) and the other times I had no problems at all. by sndckd on Apr 9, 2007 at 10:02pm Add comment Please sign in to comment 0 I've got the toner life end message too and can't get rid of it and it won't print--what do I do? by sndckd on Apr 9, 2007 at 10:04pm Add comment Please sign in to comment 0 I had the same problem with MFC-7420 this morning. Here is what I did and message is gone.1) Pull out the cartridge and look on the right side of the it. You will see a small hole that has a glass like window in side (round window).2) Turn off MFC-74203) Cover the hole on cartridge with a duct or a piece of paper. Basically block.4) Replace the cartride back in the printer and turn on the printer. 5) The message should be gone and you should be able to use the copier functionality. It worked perfectly. What an unethical practice Brother is follwoing? They want us to spend more moey buying their cartridge unnecessarily..... by yoog on May 12, 2007 at 3:23pm Add comment Please sign in to comment HALLELUJAH, it works! - pmsf77 A
