Brother MFC-420CN, the one with four colors. All of the colors, Black, Yellow, Blue, are fine, except I received a LED notice that the Magenta was “NEAR EMPTY” (which it was not). I replaced it with a brand new cartridge, and now the LED message reads, “NO CARTRIDGE". I even went and purchased another brand new Magenta cartridge thinking that the other was defected, and this brother mfc 465cn ink one - same thing. I just cannot get this LED display or the Brother machine to READ that there is a new cartridge in there. I called an authorized dealer, and he told me it may be the sensor...and to fix it, repair costs begins at $55.00+parts. I have unplugged the printer, turned it on/off, took all the cartridges out, then placed them all back in following the LED instructions, then answered YES when LED asked if it was replaced...I have even placed the wrong color cartridge into the Magenta slot, and it still does not read that there is a cartridge in there. Please advise soonest. You can no longer see the ink levels, but that didn't matter anyway, as it was incorrect before! - nintendo1889 0 http://welcome.solutions.brother.com by Anonymous on May 27, 2008 at 2:21pm Add comment Please sign in to comment 0 the machine won't remove all

my dusty and trusty inkjet printer, only to find a nice red blinking error on the display greeting me. The message was something along the lines of "Printing is https://tommynation.com/hacking-a-brother-force-your-printer-into-printing-in-black-and-white/ impossible, replace yellow ink cartridge". I tried printing in black & white (greyscale actually), by specifiying this in the print options (click to see how), but a friendly popup message just stated something along http://www.instructables.com/answers/How-can-I-make-my-printer-see-the-ink-level-as-not/ these lines: "Cannot retain printing quality, please replace ink cartridge yellow". So I couldn't print in black and white because my yellow ink was empty?! I couldn't believe it. Or rather, I could, seeing brother mfc how printer manufacturers are almost giving away printers for free, they have to make money somehow - why not in sleazy ways like this? Checking the black cartridge, which is double the size of the colored ones, it was still half full (or half empty, whichever you prefer). Only the yellow one was completely empty. So, what is a man to do? A little googling later, the eureka moment brother mfc ink came along soon enough: Black Electrical tape! You Need This As it turns out, Brother printers check the ink levels by shining a sensor light at a special "window" in the cartridges, similar by design in all their printers. Lazar: Mr. Bond, bullets do not kill. It is the finger that pulls the trigger. James Bond: Exactly. I am now aiming precisely at your groin. So speak, or forever hold your peace. So I gave it a shot: I simply pressed the cartridge against the palm of my hand almost like a gun, using a finger to hold it in such a way that the window protruded (as seen above), then simply taped it over using a piece of black electrical tape (as seen below). The light from the sensor is now reflected back, and the printer thinks the cartridge is full! (Note: I first tried using scotch tape, which failed miserably, though I speculate it might work if you color it black using strong black ink.) "Eureka!" he said (Click to view larger version) Now shut up and do your job! Loading, please wait. Soldering a hole in the top of the cartridge and pouring some more in works for me.castleink2 years agoReplyCheck out the help section on Castle Ink - http://www.castleink.com/category/36/Printer-Help.htmlmsanabria4 years agoReplyOk so the answer varies greatly depending on the type of cartridge you're trying to refill. I have some experience with Epson. There is a device that can be used to reset the chip on some printers, but there can also be a secondary issue with some of the newer cartridges - a wet sensor, hidden behind the chip. This is true of some Epson cartridges. This video might help, it shows the differences between 'older' and newer chipped cartridges and also the chip resetting device: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fB8QspjBbhk Unfortunately you might be out of luck if you have a printer that uses one of the new
