I have an application, in which I https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188365.aspx BULK INSERT the contents of a csv file into a table through stored procedure. The stored Procedure uses BULK INSERT (SQL Server 2005). This works fine in a standalone system. However when I use the same in a multitier architecture (Web server, Application Server and DB Server) it is throwing 4861 error. Could you please help? The files are stored on the Web Server. The translated error message is: Error – 2147217900:4861: Since it can not be opened for the file \\Servername\c$\Folder1\Folder2\Folder3\file.csv, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2591780/error-4861-i-do-a-bulk-insert-the-contents-of-a-csv-file-into-a-table-through It can not be loaded with large capacity. If you're running the bulk insert from a SQL Server job, make sure the user account of the SQL Server Agent service has rights to open the file. If you're running the query from a regular connection, SQL Server will impersonate you and then try to read the file. However, by default, SQL Server is not allowed to act as someone else. See this answer by Remus Rusanu for more details. share|improve this answer answered Apr 7 '10 at 11:02 Andomar 155k23226274 We are accessing the csv file through stored procedure call from Web application –Chandru Apr 7 '10 at 11:05 1 @Chandru: Then it's probably the nasty delegation issue. Operating System Error Code 3 up vote 11 down vote favorite I'm trying to set up a Stored Procedure as a SQL bulk insert Server Agent Job and it's giving me the following error, Cannot bulk load because the file "P:\file.csv" could not be opened. Operating system error code 3(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105). [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 4861) Funny thing is the Stored Procedure works just fine when I execute it manually. The drive P: is a shared drive on Windows SQL Server from LINUX via Samba Share and it was set up by executing the following command, EXEC bulk load data xp_cmdshell 'net use P: "\lnxusanfsd01\Data" Password /user:username /Persistent:Yes' Any help on this would be highly appreciated sql-server stored-procedures samba sql-server-agent bulk-load share|improve this question asked Oct 21 '13 at 10:17 user1345260 46341228 1 Looks like a permissions issue. The SQL Server Agent usually runs as a different user / with different permissions compared to when you run it manually. Does the Agent work if the file is in a local directory? Is the the Agent also running the net use command? –acfrancis Oct 21 '13 at 10:50 The agent is not running the net use command. I haven't tested that as I don't have RDP access to the SQL Server –user1345260 Oct 21 '13 at 10:53 Well, does it work if you add the net use cmd to the Agent job? Without that, I'm pretty sure the P: drive will only be available in your username's Windows session, not the Agent's. –acfrancis Oct 21 '13 at 11:02 I can add the net use command but the only question then would be it will try to map the directory every time the job runs, so for example the second time it runs and when it tries to assign P: Drive again it will give an error. How do I get this one sorted? –user1345260 Oct 21 '13 at 11:04 1 Run a net use /delete P: to rem
