I am not sure how far the direcroty goes, but I have counted to at least 26 directories deep. I cannot delete the parent folder in either explorer, or from the prompt. At the prompt I have tried RD foldername and it says, "Folder not empty". Tried del foldername\*.* with no error and still cannot delete it. Any suggestions? h05t1l3, Apr 16, 2005 #1 Sponsor Saga Lout Joined: Sep 15, 2004 Messages: 3,791 Probably a silly question but have you tried deleting individual sub-folders? Saga Lout, Apr 16, 2005 #2 WhitPhil Gone but never forgotten Trusted Advisor Joined: Oct 4, 2000 Messages: 8,684 Have you tried RD /S {foldername} (assuming the /S parameter is legit on Win2K) WhitPhil, Apr 16, 2005 #3 h05t1l3 Thread Starter Joined: Apr 16, 2005 Messages: 3 Yes, I haved tried deleting individual folders and got the same error. I tried RD /S foldername and it said, "Maximum Path Length Exceeded". Any other suggestions? P.s. Thanks for the quick replies. h05t1l3, Apr 16, 2005 #4 moper Joined: Feb 14, 2004 Messages: 1,657 See if you can move the folder to the C drive. (or D, or what ever partition it happens to be on. That may eliminate enough letters in the path to delete it. moper moper, Apr 17, 2005 #5 millimmy Joined: Apr 20, 2005 Messages: 1 moper said: See if you can move the folder to the C drive. I had the same problem with a directory structure being too deep. Oddly enough moving the top folder to my root C:\ drive worked so that I could delete it with no problems. How crazy is that. Thanks for the help. millimmy, Apr 20, 2005 #6 h05t1l3 Thread Starter Joined: Apr 16, 2005 Messages: 3 I have tried to move it from its loaction to C: partition with the following error. to copy from one 2000 server to another but i keep getting this error cannot copy file: file system error 1148 theres nothing in the knowledge base about it..what does it mean? -Jim Jim, Dec 5, 2003 #1 Advertisements Robert Mitchell [MSFT] Guest Hello Jim, This could be due to a couple things. Either you are using special characters in the file names or the path to the files is too long. If the path is too long, try using the SUBST command to map to the half way point in the path. Then see if you can access the files from the mapped drive. If you can, then shorten up the path. 180410 Cannot Access Folder Because the Path https://forums.techguy.org/threads/cannot-delete-file-file-system-error-1148-win2k.353515/ Is Too Long or Deep http://support.microsoft.com/?id=180410 -- Robert Mitchell Windows NT4&2000 MCSE Microsoft Enterprise Support Search our Knowledge Base at http://support.microsoft.com/directory Visit the Windows 2000 Homepage at http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/default.asp See the Windows NT Homepage at http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/ NOTE: Please reply to the newsgroup and not directly to me.
