Please edit your question to include what you've tried already, and what the results were. For example, have you done a disk check http://superuser.com/questions/787580/cannot-delete-a-file-system-cannot-find-the-file-specified on that drive yet? –Ƭᴇcʜιᴇ007 Jul 24 '14 at 17:37 add a comment| 7 Answers 7 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted I think it is the special character "\" in the file name that is likely breaking things. I expect that it will not let you rename it through the GUI either (but I would try). You can also try renaming it from the command line using the short file name notation that might work. I 'think' that syntax would be: "ren down2~.net down2.net" (someone please feel free to correct me on that syntax if incorrect). Running CHKDSK on the drive may also help as Windows should see it as a non-compatible file name and offer to correct... however as I see that is a My Passport drive, and we do not know what else you may have on it, make sure that you do not break/alter other files by trying to fix them to be happy in Windows. Try the rename first... or if you do something like load up a Linux Live CD that can mount that device would also let you try to rename it to something manageable. share|improve this answer answered Jul 24 '14 at 18:20 BeepBeep 662 thanks , I used chkdsk and it has been fixed:C:\Windows\system32>CHKDSK /F J: 8 large file records processed. 0 bad file records processed. 0 EA records processed. 0 reparse records processed. The microsoft support site doesnt cover my exact problem either. I cannot delete am running Windows 98 SE (build 4.10.2222) on my PC and have a Sarotech FHD-253 Pocket Hard Disk Drive (USB2) which i use for transfering data between home and work. On my removable drive (F: ) there are a number of folders which contain huge, unreadable files (hundreds of random characters such as สz๏ื๐๛.๑ฅ ). I have no idea where these came from but I suspect they got corrupted when cannot delete folder i was transfering data to and from my home and work PC. Whenever I try a scandisk, defrag, virus check, spybot check, etc. on F: the computer just hangs with the egg timer when it gets to these files. If I try to remove, rename, or move these files i get the error message "cannot delete file : file system error (1026)". I tried to remove them using DOS commands from startup but because they are on F: when i try to change directory from C: to F: i get the DOS message "Invalid directory name". All my data is visible on F: using windows explorer but I am worried that if there are any viruses, spybots or adware on F: it gets transfered to my home and work PCs when i connect it up through the USB port. Right now my home PC is running extremely slowly because F: is connected. I normally synchronise all the data between my removeable drive and home PC using "Foldermatch v3.4.6" but this also hangs up now so i cannot tell how much has been synchronised. Hope someone can help me out. Thanks in advance. mogster, Oct 19, 2004 #1 kiwiguy Joined: Aug 17, 2003 Messages: 17,584 It sounds like major d

I have a number of folders in the c:\Windows directory that I cannot delete (they all start with lots of underscore ______) and also 4 shortcuts in the quick link bar and cookies in the cookies folder that also cannot be removed (I assume that they are all linked!). The error message that I get is: Cannot Delete File: File System Error (1026) I also get the following message when trying to empty the recycle bin: Cannot Delete ______~1: Cannot Find the Specified File Any ideas??? Is there any more info that you need?? Thanks S:cry: Simonsl8er 8 posts since Apr 2004 Community Member windows-9x 0 alc6379 105 12 Years Ago Have you tried a Google search for that message? Just type the exact error message in quotes there, and you may come up with a solution on your own. 0 Discussion Starter Simonsl8er 12 Years Ago Hi, Thanks for the reply I have tried that but all of the articles (including the MS ones) relate to recycle bin issues and moving broken shortcuts and do not tell me how to actually delete the folders or files!
