I am an admin on this particular machine. I tried to delete a folder, but something went slightly wrong. When I navigate to its parent I can see it in there. When I double click the folder, I get the error message: D:\Path\to\folder is not accessible. Access is denied. When I try to delete the folder, I get Cannot delete http://superuser.com/questions/324409/how-to-remove-a-windows-folder-with-error-access-is-denied foldername: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use. and I get the same when I try to rename it or create a similarly-names folder. There is ample room left on that drive, so the disk isn't full at all. Is there anything else I haven't thought of? I don't really want to restart the machine, but I will if I have to. windows-server-2003 share|improve this question asked Aug 17 '11 at 16:24 Piers Karsenbarg 1882210 migrated from serverfault.com Aug 17 '11 at 17:05 This question came from our site for system and network administrators. Access denied means access denied. It's there and you are not allowed to delete it. No problem. –mailq Aug 17 '11 at 16:27 I have seen some weird behavior when you have filesystem corruption. You may want to run a check disk, but if that is on your system drive, you would need to reboot to do that. –Zoredache Aug 17 '11 at 16:35 @maliq Actually, there are a lot of possible errors that get crammed into the Win32 "Access Denied" error. See for example support.microsoft.com/kb/113996 There are 25 references to "ACCESS_DENIED". This could easily be STATUS_CANNOT_DELETE which doesn't say the say what the issue is. –Chris Smith Au

Solved Windows Server 2003 - Users cannot rename files/folders Posted on 2006-02-26 Windows Server 2003 5 Verified Solutions 30 Comments 2,863 cannot delete Views Last Modified: 2011-10-06 I just installed a new Windows Server 2003 and have hit what appears to be a permissions problem. Users can login and access the shares but no files\folders can be renamed. The following settings are in effect: - All shares are set for Full Control for Everyone. - Initially, NTFS permissions were setup for each user to have appropriate control. While cannot delete folder testing, I have tried to grant full access to everyone but, so far, I have not been able to allow anyone (even Administrators) to rename files/folders. - Files and folders can be deleted without problem. Additional Symptoms - After attemtping to rename a file, that item is completely locked for some time period (probably 30 mintutes but I have not timed the release of the lock). By completely locked, I mean that the server believes that the file is exclusively opened (no read access, no copying, etc.). The file does not show open in the File Server and force closing the containing folder makes no difference. The file cannot be changed even if Administrator is logged into the server itself. - When the rename fails, sometimes you get an error message but recently, there has been no message. It takes 1-2 minutes for the attempt to timeout and then the file is locked (see above). - I tried installing the new group policy management utility but that caused Active Directory to die (corrupt DB, could not reboot server). I was forced to reinstall the AD files from a backup. (same problem before
