[closed] up vote 5 down vote favorite https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/899266 2 Right now, I'm getting it in Excel 2007, but I've gotten the same error in pretty much every version of Excel I've used since 97. The only discernable similarity is that happens on my office PC. It's never bothered me on my home PC. In Excel 2003, I was able to mess around in the clipboard options until it went away. In 2007, though, the options seem to be seriously limited and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/928274/how-do-i-get-rid-of-the-cannot-empty-the-clipboard-error generally useless. Google wasn't much help, either. excel excel-2007 clipboard share|improve this question asked May 29 '09 at 21:41 user114571 closed as off topic by krock, gnat, Luke Woodward, Timmy O'Mahony, Peter Brown Nov 18 '12 at 13:37 Questions on Stack Overflow are expected to relate to programming within the scope defined by the community. I was getting a 'Cannot empty the Clipboard' error every time I moved cells around in Excel - eventually I mucked around with the settings and made it go away. Here's how; In the excel main menu (glass globe w/logo), click Excel options, then Advanced, then turn off 'Show paste options buttons' How exciting was this as my first post of the year? Last modified: July 16, 2010 Cannot Empty The Clipboard There are a multitude http://www.proposedsolution.com/solutions/office-2003-empty-clipboard-error-message/ of explanations out there as to why this error appears but thus far I have only experienced this error for one reason and it's very specific. I connect to a Windows 2003 Server http://superuser.com/questions/261362/cannot-empty-the-clipboard-in-excel-2007 through Remote Desktop Connection and the next time I attempt to do a copy or cut & paste operation in Excel or Word I receive the error message: Cannot empty the Clipboard as cannot empty displayed in the above screenshot. I have never received this error for the following reasons (as alleged by many other websites): Auto calc not on User error Windows Clipboard Viewer Download Managers Pixie Dust or Gremlins 🙂 This article briefly explains exactly what conditions this error occurs under and provides you with two solutions. One is a temporary solution and one is more permanent. cannot empty the It depends on the level of access you have to the Windows 2003 Server that you are accessing via Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) as to which solution you want or can use. Explanation: So briefly, when you connect to Windows 2003 Server via Windows Remote Desktop Connection your Windows Clipboard gets shared with the session that you create on the Terminal Server. This process is managed on the server by a file named rdpclip.exe. It is this file that is causing the problem. Solution 1 (Temporary): This solution is temporary and the problem is likely to return the next time you create a new session through RDC. Close all Microsoft Office programs that you currently have open on your local system. This has been the best solution I have found to get rid of the "cannot empty the clipboard error" in Excel 2007 & 2010. Delete the Skype add-on in IE and/or Firefox and good-bye annoying error! In reply to rjacobs7 post on February 28, 2011 Cannot clear clipboard error - Windows 7, Excel 2010 - This error occurs nearly every time a drag and drop of cell contents is attempted. I've had this same error over the past 10 years on older computers and older versions of Windows and Office. It has now reoccurred with a new laptop running Windows 7 64 bit and Office 2010. The issue can be replicated only if a browser - IE or Firefox - is open at the same time that Excel is open. Having Word and/or Outlook open at the same time will not cause the problem to occur unless a browser is also open.
