Join Now Hi all, For no reason at all, this morning we started getting http://www.sqldbadiaries.com/2011/09/05/how-the-cannot-generate-sspi-context-error-was-fixed/ on all clients the "Cannot Generate SSPI Context" error when trying to connect to our SQL Server. I am using Domain credentials to connect and up until early this morning cannot generate they worked fine (for the last 2yrs)If I use the SA account to connect with ODBC it works fine, so it appears to be something to do with the relationship between the AD and SQL 2012 security I have restarted the SQL box just in case. On the client (Windows 8.1 Pro) i get the following in event viewerthese cannot generate sspi point to Kerberos, but i know nothing about Kerberos lol A Kerberos error message was received:on logon sessionClient Time:Server Time: 12:22:23.0000 2/10/2015 ZError Code: 0x29 KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIEDExtended Error:Client Realm:Client Name:Server Realm: RETAIL.JARROLD.COMServer Name: NEUTRON$Target Name:Error Text:File: 3Line: 587Error Data is in record data. and Log Name: SystemSource: Microsoft-Windows-Security-KerberosDate: 10/02/2015 12:31:23Event ID: 3Task Category: NoneLevel: ErrorKeywords: ClassicUser: N/AComputer: JRPC6054.RETAIL.jarrold.comDescription:A Kerberos error message was received:on logon session RETAIL.JARROLD.COM\acanty Client Time:Server Time: 12:31:23.0000 2/10/2015 ZError Code: 0x19 KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_REQUIREDExtended Error:Client Realm:Client Name:Server Realm: RETAILServer Name: krbtgt/RETAILTarget Name: krbtgt/RETAIL@RETAILError Text:File: eLine: d3fError Data is in record data.Event Xml:302000x80000000000000143020SystemJRPC6054.RETAIL.jarrold.comRETAIL.JARROLD.COM\acanty12:31:23.0000 2/10/2015 Z0x19KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_REQUIREDRETAILkrbtgt/RETAILkrbtgt/RETAIL@RETAILed3f 30583040A10302010BA239043730353009A003020117A10204003028A003020103A121041F52455441494C2E4A4152524F4C442E434F4D61646D696E6973747261746F723009A103020102A20204003009A10302010FA2020400 I appreciate this is a little vague, but i don't know the actual problem to ask a direct question.Any ideas???Many thanksAndy Tags: Microsoft Windows Server 2012Review it: (250) Microsoft SQL Server 2012Review it: (7) Microsoft492,975 FollowersFollow Reply Subscribe RELATED TOPICS: SQL Process - Cannot generate SSPI context   1 Reply Anaheim OP AndyCanty Feb 10, 2015 at 2:59 UTC ok, problem solved for me.had to change the service logon to Local Service, then back to NT Service\MSSQLServer then run S
the connections were failing with the following error. Cannot generate SSPI context Since the domain controller to which this server was connected is known to have connectivity issues, it was decided to restart the SQL Server instance so that. After stopping the SQL Server instance failed to get started. Here is the error message with which it was failing. This KB article nicely explains many of the reasons why we would get "Cannot generate SSPI context" error of which an incorrect or non-existent SPN is one of the reasons. As evident from the error message the service was not starting due to some issues with the SPN (Service Principal Name). Before I start writing about how this issue was fixed, let us try to get some information about SPN. What is Service Principal Name (SPN)? SPN is a unique identifier for each service that is running on servers. With the help of SPN the clients which try to connect to the service can easily identify it. SPN for each service is registered in the Active Directory. SPNs can be registered under a Computer account or as a user account in Active Directory. The SPN for a service is created in the following format.
