Unknown characters. I have noticed some hesitation and more frequent bsods in my machine lately so I started cleaning up some things. During a defrag, an http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?154200-Can-t-rename-or-delete-files!-Unknown-characters error came up telling me to run scan disk. Scan disk found a folder with files in it that are corrupted but can't fix it. The folder is a NotationMachine Demo program that I downloaded but never ran. After looking inside the folder, there are a couple of folders and a few files with symbols for names. When I try to delete or rename the folder or files I get a message "Cannot delete (rename) File system error (1026)." I tried booting to dos and when I try to deltree the folder I get an error "CDR error: cannot access drive F: or something like that. If I look at the dir of the folder in dos I see one file inside with a name of what looks like a smiley face and the letter C. but nothing else. How do I get rid of these files and folders. Make sure you specify the correct path and http://www.verycomputer.com/1_c956e052891aa9cd_1.htm file name." The named file was without a link icon (the blue "e" with the arrow), which indicated to me that it lacked its file association. So I attempted to add cannot rename the .URL extension. I got the following error message: "Cannot rename file. File system error (1026)." So I attempted to just delete the file. I got the following error message: "Cannot delete file. File system error (1026)." Now what? Until I fix "File system error (1026)," I am unable to do a backup of this folder. Thanks for any help. thomas cannot rename file thomas sponsored links 2 14th September 06:26 gary s terhune External User Posts: 1 File system error (1026) You neglected a crucial bit of info--What is the name of the file? -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User gary s terhune 3 14th September 06:26 thomas External User Posts: 1 File system error (1026) Thanks for the quick reply, The file name is "$23.01 Battery Technology" It is (was) a link to http://www.gtsi.com/search/guidedsearch.aspx?ShopperID=c0e9fe1d-ad28-46e5-b9e7-277527f78be9&Ntt=rec+10&in_dym=1&Ntk=SearchAll&D=rec+10&Nty=1 (which is a battery product). I did a Properties on the file, which indicated that it was a "File" instead of an "Internet Shortcut." (That's why I attempted to repair it by adding ..URL to the file name.) I have already created a new link to this URL ($23.01 Battery Technology.url (with the .url extension hidden), and it works fine. I can't see why the name of the file could be important. thomas thomas 4 14th September 06:27 bill watt External User Posts: 1 File system error (1026) Thomas, See this article. Error Renaming File Cannot rename file: File System error (1026) I have an ACT! database file that has somehow changed its name from Lighthouse Corporate Database.dbf to Lighthouse Co_____________ . ACT! does not recognise this file and will not open it, I assume because it does not have the correct suffix (.dbf). When I try to rename the file I get the error message Cannot rename file: File System error (1026). Does anyone know how I can change the filename? JR. 2.
