This device cannot start.... 29Contributors 33Replies 40Views 9 YearsDiscussion Span 5 Years Ago Last Post by flagstar -2 9 Years Ago Hey. I recently tried to play a dvd on my comp and media center told me that the disk wasn't being recognised, so I checked the https://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/microsoft-windows/threads/80354/code-10-this-device-cannot-start computer and the drive was missing from there. This is the error in my device manager: This device cannot start. (Code 10) Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/489343/dvdcd-rom-disc-drive-quit-working/ is a solution available. Check for solutions does not work. It brings up a dialog that lingers for a while (i guess it communicates with server) and then disappears without so much as saying what the outcome was. Does cannot start anybody have any idea what's wrong here and how it can be fixed? Please help because its my only optical drive O.o ATM. By the way, its a dvd burner (dual layer) with this model: HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H21N ATA Device. And it came with the computer whic is Acer AST180-UD360A....I don't know what any of that means... scru 909 1,624 posts since Feb 2007 Community Member Featured windows-vista-7-8 0 Discussion Starter scru 909 9 Years Ago ok i got device cannot start it fixed by means of a registry edit from a MS KB (incidentally which was for XP) 0 theonetruewit@y 9 Years Ago Hi, can you provide more specific information as to the registry edit, where you found the info or which registry entry to edit, and how?? Thanks so much! 0 theonetruewit@y 9 Years Ago ok i got it fixed by means of a registry edit from a MS KB (incidentally which was for XP) Hi I have the very same problem.......can you provide more specific info as to where you found the repair info or how you performed the edit? Thanks!theonetruewit@yahoo.com 0 ianad 9 Years Ago Has anyone the details of this solution, I have the same problem of code 10 error on dvd running vista 0 Discussion Starter scru 909 9 Years Ago I should have posted this since thetrueone asked for a solution, instead of just emailing. Again, I say that it may not work because a)It's for windows XP, and b) it makes no mention of COde 10. It worked for me and thetrueone regardless, so you are welcome to try (so long as you are aware of the risks of editing your registry). Here is the link to the microsoft KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 also...this is just advice, and i dont expect to be held accountable should anything happen.... 0 ia

DVD/CD-ROM Disc drive quit working Started by ColoradoHermit , Mar 21 2013 12:47 PM Please log in to reply 7 replies to this topic #1 ColoradoHermit ColoradoHermit Members 25 posts OFFLINE Gender:Male Location:Canon City, Colorado Local time:01:08 PM Posted 21 March 2013 - 12:47 PM I have a Dell Studio 1737 Laptop running Windows 7. I've had problems with the DVD/CD-ROM Disc drive ever since I got it. Usually after its been running for a while and I put a disc in it won't read it but I can get it back out and if I reboot it then it will work fine. Or after its been on a while if I put a disc in, it won't read it and I can't get it to eject it either until I reboot it. Now when I put a disc in it will spin up like its trying to read it then quits. It will eject it but won't read it. I've checked in the Device Manager and checked the drivers, run driver update and it says the drivers are up to date. Under the Properties, Device Status, it says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" I've run System Restore back to a restore point when I uninstalled a HP Printer and installed a new Epson printer and it still won't work. I've gone to the Dell website to look up new drivers for it but cant find any and I can't find any helpful information
