OS is Windows 2003 Server SP2. This the production environment. Test environment is not clustered. On the Cluster Administrator/Groups there are 2 groups defined for instances. Need to create db on an instance which has a group with 3 physical drives, U, V and sql server cluster dependencies W. When trying to create a new database the default location for data and log files uses the U drive by default. If I overwrite the file location to use the V drive for the log file to separate data and log file locations, the following error is displayed : " Cannot use file 'V:\..\..' for clustered server. Only formatted files on which the cluster resource of the server has a dependency can be used. Either the disk resource containing the file is not present in the cluster group or the cluster resource of the SQL server does not have a dependency on it. Create Database Failed. Some files names listed could not be created. Check related errors.(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5184)"The disk dive V is past of the group for that instance so do I need to create dependencies among the physical disks for this particular group? Any suggestions Post #411395 Tommy BollhoferTommy Bollhofer Posted Tuesday, October 16, 2007 2:06 PM Ten Centuries Group: General Forum Members Last Login: Thursday, August 18, 2016 5:3

I get error 5184 indicating some dependency error . Here is the dependency layout in SQL server group.f:\ --> Mount pointf:\appdata --> data for SQL and user database data files --> F:f:\appothers--> other datafiles --> f:G:\--> mount pointg:\sqllogs --> user data base logfiles --> g:Does this mean I have to make f:\appdata dependent on g:\sqllogs also. If yes will the error go . Does changes in cluster resource need server restart . sodeep Flowing Fount of http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=100371 Yak Knowledge USA 7174 Posts Posted-04/05/2008: 14:49:22 Did you create dependency for Log files properly? sodeep Flowing Fount of Yak Knowledge USA 7174 Posts Posted-04/05/2008: 14:50:40 Here it is:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms177447.aspx rmiao Flowing Fount of Yak Knowledge USA 7266 Posts Posted-04/05/2008: 21:42:07 Have to add g:\ as dependency resource to sql resource, need stop sql resource to do that. Hitesh Shah Yak Posting Veteran India 80 Posts Posted-04/07/2008: 03:09:47 Did work successfully by adding g:\ as dependency resource to sql resource. Thanks all for the help. Hitesh Shah Yak Posting Veteran India 80 Posts Posted-04/08/2008: 14:02:24 The error 5184 is solved . But I have one question out of curiosity .I have g:\ and g:\sqllogs (mounted on g:\) separate disks configured. g:\sqllogs is dependent on g:\ . For adding disk dependency for SQL server resource , what should I add resource dependency g:\ or g:\sqllogs . I have added g:\ and it works . But I feel it should be dependent on g:\sqllogs (which is in turn already dependent on g:\) . Please tell me the actual settings at ur end . If u wnat me change the dependency , if i bring the resource offline , change the dependency and bring it online, is there anything else also required to be done (like reboot
the server has a dependency can be used. Last http://pradeepnagarajaiah.blogspot.com/2011/10/error-5184.html night we had a planned database file movement from a slower disk to a new faster disk. This database is on a two node http://www.lmfdb.org/EllipticCurve/2.0.11.1/%5B5184,0,72%5D/k/4 cluster. I was informed all actions pertaining to cluster were already taken care off. All I had in my plate was to detach the cannot use database, move the relevant files over to the new disk and attach it back. I detached, I moved the file, so far so good. I tried to attach the files, after pointing to the new locations. This is when I received this error 5184. The error message was self cannot use file explanatory and I figured that the disk was not added to the dependencies list for SQL server service in the cluster group. So to achieve this, I took the SQL service offline from cluster administrator, and included the new disk in the dependency list from the properties page of the SQL server service. Then proceeded to start the SQL server, and tried attaching the database. And it succeeded this time.
