Code? Logic (my logic, of course) says that if the vehicle operator is going to be alerted to a fault, then a fault must exist. Therefore there can be no light without a code being generated. The same logic accepts that

there can be faults that are not worthy of alerting the operator, and in such an instance there can be a stored code but no light. Under what circumstances can there be a Check Light but no stored Code? It is possible check engine light stays on no codes to have a code stored without a check engine light, but it is not possible to have a check engine light without a code. Emmission failures are any failure that increases the car's emissions beyond the EPA's allowable specs. Hope this helps. When I try to read the code with an ELM adapter to my laptop I do not get any stored codes. If I do the ignition on off three times it does not display a code on the dash. I have even left the battery unpluged overnight and the light come on instantly when starting the car.The light came on when I was coasting downhill and turning the ignition off to save on gas.Is their adapters that will read more codes then the cheap ones that is affordable to the weekend mechanic? The Check Engine light was on in the past and I have used the Bavarian Autosport Code Reader to read fault codes, fixed problems, and the light off for good. However, recently it is on but the Code Reader shows no fault code at all. Tried to find root causes for a while and gave up. I took it to a local independent reputable BMW/Mini Specialist shop who hooked it up to his "fancy" computer, and was not able to fix (turn off the light), verified that there is no fault code, gave me a printout (Dealer Service Bulletin) that the problem is in the software and can only be fixed by the dealer, and charged me $200+ (for "troubleshooting). Before taking it to the dealer, just want to pulse if anyone had the same problem as I described (check engine light on, but no fault code). What did you do to fix it? By the way, I disconnected the battery overnight, but no luck to reset it. Thinking about repla
