Location Marine Parade Posts 30,876 CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded (Keyboard unresponsive) Hey guys, So I got bored and cmos checksum error press f1 to continue I whipped out my 8yr+ old rig(see sig). I've been trying to get it to work again but I'm running into this message which reads CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded. My keyboard, cmos checksum error dell however, is not responding at all. Here is a pic to show the screen I get stuck on. Can't press F1 or DEL since my keyboard won't work. I have already tried plugging my keyboard PS/2 connector to my mouse port and although that did bring about an improvement(my keyboards caps/num lock indicator lights do blink when I power up the CPU) the keyboard is

still not responding after it comes to the screen above. If I plug it into the keyboard PS/2 port then the keyboard lights don't even blink when I power up the CPU. The mobo is newer cos I replaced my busted mobo about two years back or so. Please do assist, I would really appreciate it. Intend to use this for downloading etc for as long as it lives. Thanks! Or you can just live with it. Go to BIOS and find an option to turn off the checksum. For your keyboard, I think it is together with the checksum. Preface: I got a (different) PC from a friend to inspect and assess for hardware upgrade. Took my known good (old) PC (the one in question for this post, actually) and decided to take it apart, see what I could scalp from it. Different PC is too far gone, sticking to putting old PC back together and cmos checksum error gift that away instead, since it has consistently started up and worked perfectly fine even up to two months ago. This is where we begin... Gathered what specs I could: OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit BIOS: American Megatrends (last update was listed as 2008, I believe) MOBO: Asus P5B-VM SE CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo PSU: Corsair 750W RAM: 1GB (I couldn't locate make/model, apologies) GPU: ATI Radeon HD (7770?) Ghost Thermal GDDR5 So I put the PC back together again, stuck my monitor, keyboard, and mouse into the appropriate ports, and waiting for everything to boot, except I received a CMOS CHECKSUM BAD error, given options to either F1 to enter Setup or F2 to load default and continue. Nothing will load past that. Naturally, I hit F1. Get into BIOS, the keyboard won't work. I mean, the keyboard is plugged in, indicator lights are still on, and it obviously worked because I got myself into BIOS with it, but inside BIOS, it just will not work. Look at time and date, tho

The black screen appears when I boot up and reads: 'System BIOS shadowed. Check time and date settings. System CMOS checksum bad--default configuration used.'" Robert says he's tried contacting both Phoenix Technologies (makers of the BIOS) and Emachines, and neither company could help. (The BIOS dates back to 2003, and the system itself is long out of warranty.) Fortunately, this sounds like a pretty easy problem to fix. I don't think the driver-update utility is to blame here, but rather a poorly timed CMOS-battery failure. See, most desktop motherboards have a small battery that supplies power to the BIOS even when the machine is turned off. This battery might last two years or it might last 10, but when it fails, you'll often see an error message like the one above. (Your system will also fail to keep proper time, as the clock is one of the elements powered by that battery.) Most CMOS batteries are standard CR2032 "button" cells, which cost no more than a few bucks at your local drugstore, but check your motherboard documentation just to be safe. Replacing one is usually a two-minute job: pop out the old one, pop in the new one, and you're done. After that, you'l
