Home PCs Troubleshoot a BIOS or CMOS 'Checksum' Error Comments By Rick Broida, PCWorld Sep cmos checksum bad fix 21, 2011 9:40 AM Reader Robert has an older Emachines desktop that recently developed a problem: "I installed a driver updater tool, and cmos checksum error press f1 to continue when I deleted it, it did something that changed my BIOS. The black screen appears when I boot up and reads: 'System BIOS shadowed. Check time and date settings. System CMOS checksum bad--default configuration used.'" Robert says http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/CMOS-checksum-invalid-CMOS-502-Error/td-p/3996982 he's tried contacting both Phoenix Technologies (makers of the BIOS) and Emachines, and neither company could help. (The BIOS dates back to 2003, and the system itself is long out of warranty.) Fortunately, this sounds like a pretty easy problem to fix. I don't think the driver-update utility is to blame here, but rather a poorly timed CMOS-battery failure. See, most desktop motherboards have a small battery that supplies power to the BIOS even when the http://www.pcworld.com/article/240331/troubleshoot_a_bios_or_cmos_checksum_error.html machine is turned off. This battery might last two years or it might last 10, but when it fails, you'll often see an error message like the one above. (Your system will also fail to keep proper time, as the clock is one of the elements powered by that battery.) Most CMOS batteries are standard CR2032 "button" cells, which cost no more than a few bucks at your local drugstore, but check your motherboard documentation just to be safe. Replacing one is usually a two-minute job: pop out the old one, pop in the new one, and you're done. After that, you'll probably need to venture into the BIOS to reset the clock and double-check other system settings (like boot priority). Just be glad this didn't happen to your laptop. Laptops use CMOS batteries just like desktops, but on most models they're difficult--if not impossible--to replace. Which begs the question: After all these years, why haven't laptop manufacturers figured out a better way to power the CMOS? This is as far as I get.    I had replaced the screen before this started. I have also tried replacing the AC adapter, the battery, and the CMOS battery.   I'm an amateur so all suggestions will be appreciated!
 PCS 259 BPCS Moderators 259 6,855 posts Posted November 20, 2014 · Report post It indicates that the BIOS is corrupt or missing, it's telling you that it reset the BIOS/CMOS settings, that's 502 is.  However cmos reset 502 in your case it obviously didn't reset it.  Assuming you have a bad BIOS or corrupt one, all you can really do is flash it.  That's usually done from within Windows now a days so since you can't boot into Windows you'll have to use a bootable flash tool, if HP or there still is one, I haven't done a BIOS flash from outside of Windows, or one that required a bootable tool or to boot into anything in so long, I'd have to look up how to do it myself if I needed to.  It's probably on HP support site.  I don't know what HP support site said to try for the 502 error I just know what it's telling you, it's not all that uncommon.     I'd first try discharging the laptop, you know take the battery out and make sure it's not plugged in then hold the power button for a bit.  Next I'd try to enter BIOS, just change any setting that you can change back later like something insignificant in the boot order or something, then save and exit.  That just might do it but if it doesn't I'd look into flashing the BIOS to the latest version, even if it already is the latest.   Did you remove the battery and discharge the laptop before you opened it up?  I'd say it's coincidence that you swapped the LCD and now have this problem the two aren't related.
 JGriff 10 Junior Member Registered 10 24 posts Posted December 4, 2014 &midd
