The device cannot start http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/155777/realtek-ac97-audio-this-device-cannot-start-code-10/ (Code 10) error occurs when the FailReasonString is missing from the hardware key of a device. If there is an error with the sound driver and the device cannot start (Code 10), the issue could be related to a code 10 missing or incompatible audio device driver. The latest audio card device drivers can be downloaded for free from the official website of the device manufacturer. The sound card driver can be updated through the Update Driver option in the Windows Device Manager utility. Issue solution Note Issue I formatted my C drive and while installing the drivers from CD no sound drivers were shown. Even if I install them there is an error, the device may not work (code this device cannot 10) - I tried re-installing, but still the same problem occurred. Specification: AMD Athlon, Gigabyte-7VM400M-RZ. solution If you run into the error: This device cannot start Code 10 (often followed by a driver identifier). The Windows error, This device cannot start (Code 10) or This device cannot start (Code 10), is a hardware error that most commonly means that you have a bad, missing, or incompatible device driver. So, for example: This device cannot start (Code 10) in audio driver, means that you have a bad or missing or incompatible driver for your sound card. The technical explanation for this message, according to Microsoft, is this: If the device has a FailReasonString value in its hardware key, that string appears as the error message. The driver or enumerator puts this registry string value there. If there is no FailReasonString in the hardware key, you receive the following error message: This device cannot start. (Code 10) What does that mean in plain English? It means that if the device which is throwing the error has added its own custom error text to your Windows system when the device was installed, then when the device encounters an error, you will see the custom error message specific to that device. But if it doesn't have its own custom error message, then Windows uses its own generic error message for devices, which is: This device cannot start. (Code 10) Micr

(code 10)" Started by blackberet , Jul 03 2008 11:01 PM Please log in to reply 5 replies to this topic #1 blackberet blackberet Members 23 posts OFFLINE Location:Provo, UT Local time:09:01 AM Posted 03 July 2008 - 11:01 PM HP Pavillion zx5000 Intel Pentium 4 3.20 GHz 1 GB RAM Windows XP Home Edition SP 3 My friend's laptop is having trouble recognizing its sound driver (Realtek AC97). The hard drive was replaced and the operating system reinstalled a couple months ago, and ever since then it hasn't been able to play sound. Under the Device Manager, Realtek AC'97 Audio has a yellow exclamation point next to it, and under its Device Status it reads "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device, as well as downloading the most recent driver (the most recent I could find was 4.04), but to no avail. I'm not sure what else I can do at this point. On other boards that I've looked at people have asked what motherboard was being used. I used Everest to find the following information under "Motherboard": Motherboard: CPU Type Intel Pentium 4, 3200 MHz (16 x 200) Motherboard Name Hewlett-Packard Pavilion zx5000 (DZ313U#ABA) Motherboard Chipset ATI Radeon 9100 IGP System Memory 1024 MB (PC2700 DDR SDRAM) BIOS Type Phoenix (02/16/04) Communication Port ECP Printer Port (LPT1) Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated!
