The remote server doesn't have rsync this is why I am doing this this way. The remote server name is athens, and the directory I want to backup is /disk3/nicolas/scripts The only connection allowed is ssh, which works. I initiate this command to copy the SRC (athens::disk3/nicolas/scripts/) to current directory rsync --verbose athens::disk3/nicolas/scripts/ . rsync: failed to connect to athens: Connection refused (61) rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at /SourceCache/rsync/rsync-40/rsync/clientserver.c(105) [receiver=2.6.9] Is there something I need to edit on the remote server? inetd.conf perhaps? As asked, I'm using rsync version 2.6.9. There is no -e option to force ssh, in my version of rsync, the -e option is to specify the remote shell to use. I can not increase more verbosity. rsync configuration share|improve this question edited Jan 21 '11 at 9:07 asked Jan 21 '11 at 8:03 kaklon 13916 I'm confused, I would expect something like 'rsync -vvv -e ssh athens:/disk3/nicolas/scripts/ ./. -e` always takes an argument for the transport protocol you want to use. Also what's up with the double :: after athens? –Ph

This is the command I used : Code: #rsync -av --delete deployment.nta-monitor.com::installscripts/installer /root/new_debian_install However, I get this error : HTML Code: rsync:failed to connect to deployment.nta-monitor.com (192.xxx.xxx.xxx):Connection timed out (110) rsync error : error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(122) [Receiver=3.0.9] To resolve this problem, I tried a few things : 1) Check the firewall port : Code: #egrep rsync /etc/services rsync TCP/873 rsync UDP/873 Apparently the ports are open. 2) Then I test the connection with telnet. However, I get the error : telnet not found. When I attempt to install telnet & telnetd, I get the error No package telnet found. Could this be because I have not setup the repository? 3) Then I create a file /etc/rsyncd.conf with these parameters : Code: max connections = 1 log file = /var/log/rsync.log timeout = 300 [cache] comment = Cache of Mongrels path = /usr/local/cache read only = no list = yes uid = nobody gid = nogroup #auth users = mongrel list = yes hosts allow = 127.0.0.0/8 192.168.0.0/24 #secrets file = /etc/rsyncd.secrets 4) I try to edit the file /etc/inetd.conf, with the parameters below, but this file is not available. Can I just create this file? Code: rsync stream t
2009, 05:11 PM(Mythbuntu) 8.10: Trying to get backuppc to pull backups onto a LTS 8.04 server on this new box. No problems for backuppc on any of the other 5 clients here, Linux or Windows. When I attempt to list available rsync modules on the server command line I get 'connection refused': Code: :/etc$ rsync john@m3n78EM:: rsync: failed to connect to m3n78EM: Connection refused (111) rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(105) [receiver=2.6.9] The same command, directed, for example, to my Ubuntu 8.10 laptop running rsyncd set up the same way gives: Code: /etc$ rsync john@dell-d610u:: Root Full Backup /etc$ Similar results for the others except this new machine. Rsyncd apparently starts on the system OK as S20rsync in /etc/rc2.d: Code: $ cat /var/log/rsyncd.log 2009/02/07 13:27:59 [6903] rsyncd version 3.0.3 starting, listening on port 873 $ /etc/rsyncd.conf: Code: log format = %h %o %f %l %b log file = /var/log/rsyncd.log [Root] path = / comment = Full Backup uid = root gid = root read only = true auth users = john secrets file = /etc/rsyncd.secrets /etc/rsyncd.secrets: Code: john:_my_password_ File permissions: Code: /etc$ ls -lisa rsync* 596731 4 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 199 2009-02-07 14:03 rsyncd.conf 596733 4 -rw------- 1 root root 16 2009-01-24 08:50 rsyncd.secrets /etc$ There is no apparent firewalling going on: Code: $ sudo iptables -L Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination $ I can't see what's different bewteen this system and the others, apart from its being Mythbuntu. No replies from that forum on this topic. Suggestions? Magic dust? Thanks, DJ hictioFebruary 8th, 2009, 07:39 PMNot magic dust :) , but, just check the very basic network connection to the rsync port on that host. Try: telnet ip.address 873 ENTER Does it open a connection? DrJohn999February 8th, 2009, 10:58 PMWell, that found it, but not for the reason you might think: :~$ telnet m3n78em 873 Trying 192.168.2.14... telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused :$ Huh -- the
