freebsd after doing fresh install.I was trying to install vim in freebsd by using the pkg_add command not found pfsense command pkg_add -r vim I got this below given Error: Error: Unable to get ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-9.0-release/Latest/vim.tbz: File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access) pkg_add: unable pkg_add command not found nas4free to fetch 'ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-9.0-release/Latest/vim.tbz' by URL pkg_add: 1 package addition(s) failed If we read the above given Error message,"File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)" . The error itself says there is problem in site or site path. So I checked it by opening the web browser and found the given

It seems like I'm missing basic utilities, like pkg_add. find / -name pkg_add is returning 0 hits (even when run as root). ports and portmaster seems to be missing too (the only hit is in usr/ports/port-mgmt/portmaster, and its a directory and not a program. When I try to run http://superuser.com/questions/920483/missing-basic-packages-like-pkg-add the following to boot strap it: setenv PACKAGESITE pkg.us-east.FreeBSD.org pkg Results in: pkg: Error fetching pkg.us-east.FreeBSD.org/Latest/pkg.txz: Invalid URL scheme. But according to Official FreeBSD Binary Packages now available for pkgng its supposed to just work... I've also tried using setting PACKAGESITE ports-mgmt/pkg; and setting PACKAGEROOT and ftp://ftp3.FreeBSD.org with no joy. Also, this was not helpful: pkg_add: command not found. It does not seem to be a path problem because it cannot be found with find. Why was a package manager not installed by default? Or why does it not work (am I doing something obviously wrong)??? How do I install the basic packages, like pkg_add? It had a bogus nameserver listed. I'm not sure what went wrong here because I clearly did not add that 172.16.*.* address. pkg_add is still missing. on FreeBSD 7.2 If you're in a situation like, me where you http://www.pc-freak.net/blog/install-binary-packages-older-freebsd-releases/ run some old verison of FreeBSD and you need to http://forums.nas4free.org/viewtopic.php?t=7143 install a bunch of packages let's say GNOME Desktop environment on a host which before was used as a network router / mail server and general firewall. You will probably be surprised the usual way to install a pre-compiled BSD binaries command not with pkg_add -vr packagename will no longer work, i.e.:
freebsd# pkg_add -vr gnome2

The reason why binary package fetch and command not found install no longer work is obvious the repository link ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-7.2-release/Latest/ which was previously working no longer works. So to install be able to install this already obsolete compiled packages what is neccessery is to explicitly change the FTP location, where the packages will be looked for with a location to a working link corresponding to your FreeBSD version. To make sure the link is working in accordance with your FreeBSD release do a search in Google and get the proper FTP link. My BSD version is RELEASE 7_2, hence after a quick look in Google, I found a binary repository containing packages for my FreeBSd under link:
ftp://ftp-archive.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD-Archive/ports/i386/packages-7.2-release/Latest
To change the default set binary .tgz packages repository to the newer correct one for the currently logged in user via tty or over ssh use the csh / bash PACKAGESITE variable. Whether in csh type:
freebsd# setenv PACKAGESITE ftp://ftp-archive.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD-Arch
