It seems like I'm missing basic utilities, like pkg_add. find / -name pkg_add is returning 0 hits (even when run as root). ports and portmaster seems to be missing http://superuser.com/questions/920483/missing-basic-packages-like-pkg-add too (the only hit is in usr/ports/port-mgmt/portmaster, and its a directory and not a program. When I try to run the following to boot strap it: setenv PACKAGESITE pkg.us-east.FreeBSD.org pkg Results in: pkg: Error fetching pkg.us-east.FreeBSD.org/Latest/pkg.txz: Invalid URL scheme. But according to Official FreeBSD Binary Packages now available for pkgng its supposed to just work... I've also tried using setting PACKAGESITE ports-mgmt/pkg; and setting PACKAGEROOT and ftp://ftp3.FreeBSD.org with no joy. Also, this was not helpful: pkg_add: command not found. It does not seem to be a path problem because it cannot be found with find. Why was a package manager not installed by default? Or why does it not work (am I doing something obviously wrong)??? How do I install the basic packages, like pkg_add? Sorry about the basic question. pkg_add is what I use to install packages, so I'm a bit lost when its missing. freebsd share|improve this question edited May 28 '15 at 2:39 asked May 28 '15 at 2:00 jww 2,442103682 Most of these issues were resolved by fixing /etc/resolv.conf. It had a bogus nameserver listed. I'm not sure what went wrong here because I clearly did not add

I reinstalled Freenas and minidlna and the above error occurred. Network appears ok pings okClick to expand... I am having the same error as mickt. Worked fine twice before. The package installed correctly earlier this week May 5, 2015, but now the minidlna.tbz file is not at the location. I was able to install the package from .../packages-8.4-release/minidlna.tbz but I do not want this older version. Using a web browser it looks like /packages-9-stable/ is "404". Is there a mirror for the latest package? Can I expect the ftp site to be back up anytime soon? I used as was advised earlier to use "pkg install minidlna" instead of " pkg_add -r minidlna" all went well mickt, May 9, 2015 #43 avalon60 FreeNAS Experienced Joined: Jan 15, 2014 Messages: 345 Thanks Received: 4 Trophy Points: 21 I am also getting these errors after this line: pkg_add -r minidlna Error: Unable to get ftp:/

DESCRIPTION The pkg_add command is used to install packages created with the pkg_create(1) command. Packages containing pre-compiled applications from the /usr/ports tree can be found on the OpenBSD FTP site or on the official OpenBSD CD. Note: System distribution files, e.g., base58.tgz, comp58.tgz, are not packages and may not be installed using pkg_add. pkg_add can be used to install new packages, to replace existing packages with other flavors (option -r) or to update packages to newer versions (option -u). In a hurry, a new package can be installed using ‘pkg_add -U package', which updates dependencies and then installs the new package. Details of packing-list internals are documented in pkg_create(1). pkg_add will syslog(3) installations and updates by default (but see pkg.conf(5)). pkg_add relies on the file system information being consistent. In case of a system crash, /var/db/pkg may become corrupted. Use pkg_check(8) to repair things. If a package is digitally signed: pkg_add checks that its signature is valid and that the compressed package data matches the signature. pkg_add verifies that the signature was emitted by a valid signing key, as stored in /etc/signify/*-pkg.pub pkg_add verifies that each file matches its sha256 checksum right after extraction, before doing anything with it. pkg_add verifies that any dangerous mode or owner is registered in the packing-list. By default, pkg_add enforces signed pac
