up ORA-12545 : Oracle SID Suddenly Stopped working up vote 2 down vote favorite I have a baffling problem. I have an Oracle 11g set up on Linux that was working fine. I was able to connect remotely from other machines using a SID based connection string such as sqlplus myschema@192.168.184.102:1521:orcl then for some inexplicable reason it stopped working. I'm not sure what ora 12545 connect failed toad I or someone else jiggled loose. now i'm only able to connect remotely using a SERVICE_NAME or TNSNAME based methods sqlplus myschema@192.168.184.102:1521/orcl sqlplus myschema@ORCL Both work and this would be fine and well, but I have applications that rely on SID connection pattern that I can change. Could some kind soul help me figure out what I'm missing Below is my configuration: LISTENER.ORA: [oracle@dbora112 ~]$ cat /opt/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/network/admin/listener.ora # listener.ora Network Configuration File: /opt/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/network/admin/listener.ora # Generated by Oracle configuration tools. Now I am trying to create a database and using OEM Database Configuration Assistant. I put in FirstDB for the Global Database Name and put in FirstDB connect failed for the SID. I completed the wizard and set up my tnsnames.ora file with the SID and hostname. Then I tried to connect using OEM with the Sys login and it says: ORA-12545:Connect failed because target host or object does not exist. Should I put in localhost or 127.0.0.1 for my Global Database Name? I assume I connect as Sys or System and the password I created right after creating the connect failed because database. Please advise on how I can get this to work? Answer: Use oerr to look up the ORA-12545 error: ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist Cause: The address specified is not valid, or the program being connected to does not exist. Action: Ensure the ADDRESS parameters have been entered correctly; the most likely incorrect parameter is the node name. Ensure that the executable for the server exists (perhaps "oracle" is missing.) If the protocol is TCP/IP, edit the TNSNAMES.ORA file to change the host name to a numeric IP address and try again. I would start to debug a ORA-12545 error with these steps: making sure that your listener is running (lsnrctl stat) testing connectivity with ping, and then tnsping. verifying connectivity via the DNS (e.g. /etc/hosts) make sure to check your tnsnames.ora parms.
