the ora-12454 error: ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist Cause: The address specified is not valid, or the program being connected to does not exist. Action: Ensure ora 12545 connect failed toad the ADDRESS parameters have been entered correctly; the most likely incorrect parameter is the node name. Ensure that the executable for the server exists (perhaps "oracle" is missing.) If the protocol is TCP/IP, edit the TNSNAMES.ORA file to change the host name to a numeric IP address and try again. On Oracle DBA Forums, a user posts about having problems connecting on local workstation options to a new ora-12454 database. Below are the specifics of the question, as well as the original conflicts with ORA-12545: Question I have Oracle 9i installed on my local Windows XP workstation that will be used for local development only. Now I am trying to create a database and using OEM Database Configuration Assistant.I put in FirstDB for the Global Database Name and put in FirstDB for the SID.I completed the wizard and set up my tnsnames.ora file with the SID and hostname. Then I tried to connect using OEM with the Sys login and it says:ORA-12545:Connect failed because target host or object does not exist.Should I put in localhost or 127.0.0.1 for my Global Database Name?I assume I connect as Sys or System and the password I created right after creating the database. Please advise on how I can get this to work? Answer: The replier advised two actions to begin resolving ORA-12545, starting by: making sure that your listener is running (lsnrcrl stat) testing connectivity with ping, and then tnsping. verifying connectivity via the DNS (e.g. /etc/hosts) make sure to check your tnsnames.ora parms. Also important in resolving ORA-12545 if using VIP's is to "start by verifying connectivity via the DNS (e.g. /etc/hosts), a

Connect Failed Because Target Host or Object Does Not Exist tips Expert Oracle Database Tips by Burleson Consulting December 6, 2015 Question: When I try to http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_ora_12454_connect_failed_because_target_host_or_object_does_not_exist.htm connect to Oracle in SQL*Plus I get the following error message: TNS-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist What is the cause of the TNS-12545 error? Answer: The oerr utility shows this for the TNS-12545 error: See here, on how to use oerr to look up error http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_tns_12545_connect_failed_because_target_host_or_object_does_not_exist.htm messages. TNS-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not existCause: The address specified is not valid, or the program being connected to does not exist. Action: Ensure the ADDRESS parameters have been entered correctly; the most likely incorrect parameter is the node name. Ensure that the executable for the server exists (perhaps "oracle" is missing.) If the protocol is TCP/IP, edit the TNSNAMES.ORA file to change the host name to a numeric IP address and try again. This TNS-12545 error is almost always an issue in your tnsnames.ora file, specifically your ADDRESS parameter, often a bad host name (node name). As a test for the DNS, temporarily replace the host name with the IP address, see here for details. Please go through these steps to diagnose the connectivity issue.
